I know the reason why the majority of the episodes have to be that way. The AMC executives are a bunch of tightwad ***holes who won't give the show the kind of budget it needs. That's why the zombie count is so low and the action is so rare. It's way most episodes last season only utilized 2 or 3 of the main cast per episode. Knowing that fact doesn't make the show any more enjoyable for me, though.

I like Daryl. He's the most likable character on the show... but only because he hasn't gotten any major focus. He hangs around in the background and does something cool once in a while. The moment they decide to tell us who he is, I guarantee you that I won't like him anymore. Once they have him start making decisions, which have to be STUPID ones for the sake of the plot, then he'll just be as stupid as any other character.

.
Daryl's character has been pretty well defined, (especially in the "shack" episode) he was a nobody, had nothing going on. stoner red neck trailer trash. in the real world we see people like that all the time and usually think very little of them. I think that's kind of the point of his character. and honestly if they didn't do that episode I wouldn't have even noticed Maggie's sister disappearing. she's been more of a plot device (a place to put the baby wile everyone else is doing something) I think she needed a little face time to make her disappearance meaningful. And the groupings of characters last season was meant to show the disconnect of the group and the sense of isolation felt by the individuals, and to give a feeling of hopelessness.
That said I do agree that a show like Walking dead would be better on HBO or Showtime, production budget wise. plus I feel a bit more swearing would be used in a zombie apocalypse than AMC will allow. the down side is HBO would turn it into soft-core porn. A well written show doesn't need a big budget, fancy sets or a lot of special effects. look at the Twilight Zone, most episodes have a cast of one to six people and takes place in one room. all just smart Dialogue.
