I've never used one before. It could be it's automated to summon a manager if the item isn't found in their store inventory system.

The whole experience serves to illustrate yet again that Wal-Mart is just another example of a bloated American corporation that doesn't give a damn about its customers. If someone gets mad that they can't buy an item that's mistakenly put out on a shelf by an inept employee or manager, no biggie, we'll easily get hundreds more customers into our stores to replace the one that gets upset about our "item not found" computer inventory screw-ups.
