If there is going to be a new Hulkbuster, I'd prefer one that more closely resembled the version used by Stark following the Hulk's return to Earth in the 'World War Hulk' story. To offer up a tweaked version of the 1994(?) armor seems like a waste of effort.

For me, the pick you posted elicited the opposite response to your comparison between the Thrasher fig and the Hulkbuster. What I see is a Thrasher toy that does not exceed by much (if at all) the aesthetic presentation of a fig made almost ten years ago...the Hulkbuster still holds up in my opinion.
I couldn't disagree with you more good sir. The Toybiz armor was great during its time, but it is not a faithful representation of the comic armor to me, but then again it depends on who's drawing it. In fact I much prefer what the MU 3.75" did with this armor in term or aesthetic presentation. Articulation in the arms and the lack of a fist option are certainly things I wish this figure did better, otherwise, what I wanted this pic to point out is that figures can get better.

If you hold the Thrasher armor in your hand alongside Toybiz Hulkbuster you will see the differences. Let's not even get into faithful representation of the source material because Thrasher wins hands down being an exact replica of Capullo's artwork brought to life. Every finger is individually jointed down to the knuckles, and hell his Bruce Wayne head's the same size as Stark's, roughly, and with an armor that dwarfs the guy supposed to be fighting the Hulk, so yeah I think Hukbuster shows its age today. It doesn't look bad in a hall of armor display, that's for sure and I'm definitely not saying I don't like the figure, only that a movie based ML figure of the armor is anticipated by me after receiving the Thrasher figure.

It's funny you mentioned the WWH armor. I thought that design was the blockiest piece of junk I ever saw short of his Phoenix buster armor in AvX. What the movie version has done with Hulkbuster is exactly what I wanted from that armor. It even maintains its modular approach the comics did by forming around Stark's Mark XLIII, only the armor seems to fly towards him through mental command having perfected what his MK XLII prototype was trying to accomplish. Advantage MCU, IMO.
