I know you didn't direct this to me, but your comment piqued my interest and makes for a good discussion. I definitely agree with you about the fluid nature of Marvel characters (or any comic pantheon: DC, Image, etc...). A phenomenon that only picks up speed as characters gain popularity/fans and evolve beyond their origins. That said, I also think the foundation/origin of a hero (or villain) is important when understanding the character as a whole.

I'd like to borrow one of your examples, if you don’t mind. Wolverine, while being one of the most iconic X-men, still has strong ties to the Hulk. Wolverine was a great foil for the Hulk considering that they are both essentially monsters, that just happen to do heroic things. This relationship has been played up by Marvel throughout the history of the characters in spite of the dramatically different directions the two have gone in since their first encounter. The Hulk vs 'toon (one of my fav Marvel animations) touched on this original relationship. The two have a shared moment (on the roof of a building) in the Infinity Gauntlet with Warlock even confirming their psychological connection and similarity in temperament. I can’t even begin to recall all of the times Wolvie and Banner have fought and touched upon the “kindred spirts” quality to their relationship. I tend to start at the beginning when trying to conceptualize the ethos behind these heroes/villains and I believe origins to be very important to the fundamental understanding of any character. I know I’m barking up a different tree than what you were getting at, but what you wrote stirred these thoughts …

About Marvel Studios vs Fox/Sony/the world (?); it’s all above my pay grade and I’m still scratching my head. I thought this licensing stuff was germane only in the case of movies. Then I find out that Surfer will be replaced by Beta Ray in the Planet Hulk ‘toon ; another all-time fav Marvel animation of mine that would have been even more satisfying had Surfer made it into the work. I wouldn’t actually care as much if these licensing issues were isolated to the films (I’m not very invested in the movies – I believe ‘toons can be better from a budget and casting perspective, but that’s another discussion), but to think I might not get another Surfer fig because Fox won’t relinquish their hold on all Kirby FF related properties makes me cringe. It seems like these squabbles are spilling over into ancillary subsets of comic culture and I’m aggravated by that fact…
I did not know that they we replacing Surfer. But i find people, and from what i gather in your statement, blaming Fox. I actually think Fox is doing nothing wrong. It's all Disney. I enjoy every studio s version of heroes as the differences help drive competition or so it should.

It's up to us to put the onus on Disney. They are the ones punishing the fans, not Fox or Sony. Disney getting marvel is the cause in reality.
