I know both versions were voiced by Henry Silva, but in the later series he cut back on the accent which was too cheesy when combined with the look. The spiked collar was stupid, but the rest of his getup was better even if only because it was a solid color.
Bane has probably had the one of the worst records for portrayals out of the comics. He's almost always thrown in as the big dumb brute, and even a lot of things that still claim he's very intelligent never really show it in any way.
I believe Bruce Timm and Paul Dini both admitted to not liking Bane as a character, and it definitely shows. NBA/TNA Bane also appeared in the Mystery of the Batwoman movie too, as I recall. I just hate that design so much. I don't mind him looking like a full-on luchador.

Arkham Origins was the first time in a long time that I felt like Bane was shown proper respect outside of the comics. It's a shame that they had to end it by wiping his mind to explain why he is the big stupid brute in Arkham Asylum (written by Dini), but everything else was a blast.
