The modern Apes figures they made are excellent, but I think the reason it doesn't work to just sculpt it here is because Mogwai are supposed to be cute. The apes are generally meant to look fairly vicious so they're okay with sculpted plastic, plus most apes have shorter matted down fur in reality. With these guys who should be cute you do want that plush element.
