I could just imagine Hugh Jackman walking off the set of XMO, because wolverine is NOT Sabertooth's brother!, or Chris Evans getting angry because Bucky fell off of a Missile, not a train! not everyone grew up reading comics, I'm sure Renner researched his roll a bit, but I could definitely see benefits to bringing in a fresh un-biased perspective,, especially on a project as big as MCU where your really building a whole new continuity as apposed to being stuck with 75+ years of other writers work to tip toe around. Also, of course he's doing it for a paycheck! they all are. no one gets into a multi billion dollar film franchise for the fun of it. I'm sure when RDJ's contract comes up he's not going to say "I just love the character and the fans so much I'll do the next three films for free". and as far as I can tell he's probably the coolest and most down to earth one of the bunch.
