HISS Tank presents to you, another early review. On Free Comic Book Day 2010, IDW Publishing released the return to the comic series that started it all, GI Joe A Real American Hero, with the godfather of GI Joe comics, Larry Hama!
That was only the beginning, as the story continues in GI Joe #156!

Review

To say that GI Joe A Real American Hero #156 is exciting would be an understatement. This issue reminds me of the excitement I had when reading GI Joe Origins #1. My excitement has nothing to do with the fact that this issue continues A Real American Hero. It's just a damn good issue!

The entire issue is action packed. The Joes are on the run, similar to the upcoming premise of GI Joe Renegades. This makes for an exciting situation, since Cobra has more power, and even the US government on their side. It would be boring if GI Joe didn't have the odds against them, so I'm glad IDW went this route.

The issue basically shows how some of the Joes are scrambling to regroup, in different parts of the world. The pressure is on, and it's exciting to see how they deal with it. The circumstances are not in their favor at all.

Some characters were given slight redesigns, others, heavy. The Red Ninjas show up, and they look awesome. I want figures of these versions. If Agustin Padilla redesigned them, he did a great job.

Speaking of Padilla, his artwork in this issue matches the action scripted by Hama, very well. We saw hints of this in his OPERATION HISS issues, but I think his work here is an improvement. It really shines and I think this is a great pairing for a creative team.

The only thing I didn't like were the random specks of ink. They aren't as prevalent here as in previous issues by Padilla, but they are still noticeable. They only work well in panels with a lot of action, otherwise they just look like they were added on accident.

Without ninjas, there wouldn't be a certain silent character that Hama is fond of using. Nonetheless, his presence is welcome, and I was anticipating seeing him in action. He isn't overused, and it was great seeing him back in action, with the help of a certain friend...

The issue left me with some questions. Is the Joe team going to be missing a member in the next issue? Who won the "cat and mouse" game? In any case, definitely pick this issue up. Those of you who loved the original continuity will be happy, and those of you who just want a great comic in general will be satisfied too.
