I'm not discounting the theory that this could be a custom but it's possible that it could be legit. Either way, the seller is totally being greedy by starting the auction at $1,000.
Yeah, I'm a BIG proponent of the $.99 no reserve auction. With a rare item where you KNOW people are looking for it (or aware of it), that's always how you get the highest price, and you know the market set the price. He might have gotten $400, he might get $1500, but without starting it at 99 cents, he's just showing people he has it.
