I use a sock. lol. A heavy wool sock. 1 good wrap around the figure and then slowly crank the vice. The channel locks work but you have less control & can smash your fingers if you're stupid.

I'm slowly getting larger balls when it comes to customizing, Started with just the boil & pop, Moved on to the vice split, some cutting & drilling. Now I'm looking at picking up a dremel tool (for around the house of course) It's easy to try this stuff out when figures are easy to get. But when they are hard to find/expensive & you have one shot not to mess up. lol
