Eh, I'd rather it be a side-effect of the nature of her powers/how her powers have intermingled with magical training and aptitude. Makes her more unique in the Marvel Universe.

That's actually kind of how it's explained in the original Onslaught story, in not so many words she hexed her mutant genes to not have the strengthening effect on Onslaught or something like that. It's been a while since I've read it but that's the basic idea.
