Yes, 3.75 are cheaper but Black Series has fewer figures to collect so I figure the price difference wouldn't be vastly different. Which do you prefer and why?
I have always had a 3.75" collection of SW toys and they got better and better every year it seemed but then Hasbro shot themselves in the foot. Once the decision to re-release TPM in 3D was called Hasbro made an entire wave of figures for it with the only really worthwhile/remarkable one being a new Darth Maul. This wave absolutely cluttered my stores and 80% of the wave peg-warmed like they were glued in place. A long drought ensued with no new releases in my area for what seemed to be a little over a year and so I was kicked out of collecting since any figures in the waves after went for ludicrous second-market prices. Eventually the pegs were cleared of TPM stuff and the Black Series 3.75" toys renewed the SW toy sections of my stores with some new stuff but mainly welcomed re-issues of those figures that skipped me because of the dry period. I'll always have a special place in my toy collecting heart for SW 3.75" toys but my days of anticipating new releases are slim and picky. The 6" line however has sort of reinvigorated my SW collecting spirit.
At first I was not interested since 3.75" was my main SW area but I knew that I would still get a few of those "must have" characters for a small display. Basically Boba Fett, a Stormtrooper, and Darth Vader were my only real wants when the line was introduced (Vader hadn't even been announced at the time but we all knew they'd get to him). I hunted for so long to no avail trying to get Fett in wave 2 and had passed on every figure in wave 1. I never found Boba Fett in stores, just a sea of Leia, Greedo, and some Han too. I did then find the Stormtrooper when he was released and got one. It is just such a damn well done toy that I immediately expanded my want-list. I eventually got Boba Fett online for retail price and my collection has now grown a decent amount.
As much as the 3.75" toys are awesome and great to play with there is a notable amount of higher display value with the 6" toys. The fact that Hasbro cut back articulation to '77 levels on their 3.75" toys in general and now reserves articulation in that scale for exclusives put in some extra push towards the 6" line as well. Basically for me it comes down to the 6" figures looking better, being bigger, and then not wanting every character in the line to begin with making them my preferred line now. However if I wanted every character available and then to actually play with them then the 3.75" line has a lot going for it still.
