Despite using Krylon Fusion Red for the body and the same Model Masters Acryl I always use for my minor touch-ups, the red keeps coming off every time I touch the figure. Couple that with the fact that for some reason now his right arm WILL NOT stay firmly attached at the bicep swivel and keeps dropping off... yeah. This is a no-go. But I think my overall concept for his construction is solid. The parts in this scheme look good and he does indeed look like the character he's supposed to be.
Ah, well. Live and learn so that next time I'll do better.
Must be a good time for Red Guardian, he's the first one I finished from my current batch.
As for tips, the first and most important tip I can offer is to be patient and TAKE YOUR TIME! I spend a few days making customs (usually doing them 2/3 figs at a time) while watching tv or playing a game or whatever. I can apply a couple of coats to one figure and while that is drying work on the next. By the time the last coat is applied to the last figure it's about an hour or two later and the first figure is completely dry and ready for the next road of coating.
And for that body, the bicep pegs can warp easily. Happened on Luke Cage for me. You can CAREFULLY shave the peg down (rotate the arm/body as you shave off layers of the plastic to keep it even) until the arm will go on and stay on. If you do it right the arm will go on good as new and won't fall off. Um...as a caveat I don't recommend actually doing this unless you're comfortable with taking an exacto to the peg because if you trim it too much the peg will be ruined and the only way to fix it would be to crack open the torso and replace the entire shoulder ball but that opens up a whole can of worms. So... yeah...
No need for primer, these figures take paint easily without it. Regarding the oil, you can wash the figures if you want but it hasn't made much difference in my experience so I don't see what the fuss is. I also have my figures soaking in boiling hot water for a minute so I can just pull them apart easily so maybe that accomplishes the same thing. No idea, never thought much about it either way.
Highly recommend using a sealer as I've mentioned before. I use Krylon Matte Finish 1311. Bonds the paint to the plastic and seals out moisture. Just don't overdue the spray!! A fine coat should do it. I hold the can about a foot away when spraying.
All that said, great go at a custom, Ursa, and definitely not a failure! For a first attempt that's phenomenal work!! Everyone has to start somewhere. Just practice and it'll get easier.
And uh...I hope you're not drinking straight from that bottle of Worcestershire Sauce in the background there.
