Went to Hastings and was pleasantly greeted pretty much right in the front section with a small display stand type thing for Alien Day with some Kenner Ripley figures still there. Then I also found the DST Ghostbusters wave 2 (minus Egon) so I picked up Venkman because it's Bill Murray.
My thoughts on the Venkman figure are mixed to positive. Starting with the good stuff he is fairly well articulated and the sculpt is generally quite nice. The likeness isn't spot on but this is definitely a toy of Bill Murray from Ghostbusters. The proton pack is great and the stream plugs nicely onto the end of the stick. Now for the bad which I will probably go into more detail about but that doesn't mean I dislike the figure as a whole. He has a really hard time standing and even when I spread his legs a little and get things more dynamic it still felt like he would eventually fall if I didn't pop him on a base. Matters here are worsened though as the pieces he comes with to build the rooftop diorama lack any pegs for his feet and they don't even go together on their own, it's just some floor with stair-steps and a different piece of steps. I had to grab a NECA base since other Select figures who have needed help but didn't have their own bases work with the NECA bases. Venkman's foot is just too shallow to completely plug onto the base's peg but it goes in enough that he now feels much more secure standing. Overall I do like the figure but not as much as I was hoping I would. I feel like a large part of this figure's cost will now go wasted as I have no intentions of finishing the rooftop diorama and the pieces individually kinda suck.
Ripley on the other hand is a good touch of nostalgia and a well done figure but with one small problem. She can't really hold the smartgun in its movie style stance since her left hand isn't made for gripping the side-bar and then her right isn't tight enough on the back handle. She can hold it well if her right hand is around the vertical bar on the right side which is a little reminiscent of the old toy but it's not the "correct" way. I wasn't totally sold on this figure before since I already have the movie version but seeing it in person was enough to sway me and then as a great surprise bonus it only rang up for $15 at checkout which only sweetened the deal. It's not a must-have figure but it's a fun kick of nostalgia.
