It plays directly into that notion and question of "Why is one accepted, and the other not?"

Because of ignorance and petty reasons that don't really mean anything other than how people justify it to themselves.

We still see it today itself. White celebrities praised even with such horrific deeds in their past they've never atoned for or in some cases still do, while PoC celebrities are reminded of their misdeeds forever, even if they have genuinely grown from their mistakes and literally served their time for them.

And that's not even counting the crap that happens all over the world like several instances mentioned by Kernel above.
