I kind of see franchises as the movies they started out to be, and then the subsequent ones as movies that become influenced by self-awareness and / or fanservice. So to me Friday 13th 1 & 2, Nightmare 1, and Halloween 1 & 2, as very different beasts to the sequels, so I judge the sequels seperately.
