Review

Max Brooks returns with Howard Chaykin and Antonio Fuso to tell the stories of Dr. Mindbender and Doc respectively. This is a good match up because they share one thing in common; their profession, but how they go about their business is completely different. It is fitting that they belong to their respective organizations, and this issue shows why.

This issue of Hearts and Minds has the same characteristic of previous issues; being ideal not just for followers of IDW GI Joe fans, but new and casual readers alike. The title serves as a great introduction to IDW's GI Joe lore.

The 1st half of this issue tells Mindbender's story. In it we learn more about his background, and his reason for pushing the limits of scientific research. The panel design is very easy to follow and complements the script rather well. I'd like to see a reduction in color-holds by Arbutov, but that's about it. Some of you may not be used to Chaykin's style but his work on this issue shows that he is ideal for this title.

The 2nd half of this issue focuses on Doc, whom we haven't seen much of. Fuso's art seems simpler. For example, look at his previous GI Joe Cobra/Hearts and Minds issues. The colorist(Flippo Flores) for this issue is not the usual colorist paired with Fuso. The colors take some time to get used to. Fuso's work lends more to subtle colors. This issue features cel shading and in some panels, it looks out of place. Not bad, but definitely noticeable.

Overall the story in this issue flowed seamlessly and is worth picking up. I hope IDW has Brooks onboard for other GI Joe titles as well.
