When the Ultimate Universe first debuted, I was really cautious, even hateful and spiteful towards it, as I was like many others in not wanting anything tampering, or re-imagining the characters that I loved. It almost seemed sacrilegious.

Then, a friend of mine handed me "The Ultimates" in TPB form. I scoffed at it initially, as I was a much bigger X-Men fan, and I always kinda looked at the Avengers as being a team of boring goody two shoes, led by a guy who was the biggest goody two shoe of all, a guy wrapped in the American flag with wings on his head who seemed like an even bigger dork. I eventually caved and gave it a shot, and I was stunned, as Cap was suddenly infinitely cooler than he had ever been, as were many of the other characters.

I then gave several of the other Ultimate books a shot, and ended up loving them. I really felt like Marvel did a great job in capturing what it must have been like for those reading during the golden ages, because of what each book brought to the table. Ultimate X-men grounded itself again in the fear and racism (and even tackled issues such as sexuality, as it openly introduced gay mutants for the first time that I could remember outside of Northstar from Alpha Flight...) that made the initial books such a good read. I was able to identify with many of Spider-Man's adventures again, as he struggled to maintain friend and relationships, and Fantastic Four was just good old fashioned science fiction. And then there was the Ultimates...it made a fan of the Avengers out of me, with it's wit and banter, which I feel really carries on pretty well in the MCU (as well as elements from several other Ultimate Marvel comic series...)

Granted it wasn't all grand...as I felt that certain books kinda lost their way after the first two or three years, and not all of the re-imaginings of characters were great (Ultimate Carnage anyone?) but I can say that those years were some of the most enjoyable times that I have had reading comics, and had some pretty awesome moments...(such as Fury and Cap testing the Hulk's machismo, or Spider-Man getting ticked off at the legality of a certain Sam Raimi unauthorized-biopic that he wasn't getting paid a dime for...)

Hulk Not Gay! Hulk Straight!

Seriously though, I enjoyed how they got rid of the child like mentality of the Hulk, and turned him into a being of pure rage that just didn't know any better. It made it easier than ever to understand the conflict that Banner the man was going through. Pissed him off, and he might just eat you.
