See, here's the thing, Gunn never said he hated Nova, just that he wasn't a character he wanted to use. Gonna copy-paste from an article/interview piece on CosmicBookNews:

Honestly, he seems pretty indifferent about the character, and if Marvel's not pushing him to use Nova, and Nova wouldn't fill a vital role in the story being told, I think it's just fine for him to not use the guy. After all, unless the MCU lasts for a few decades, we're not going to get all the characters we want to see, even if they're higher-profile ones. Case in point: I'm still waiting for Hercules to show up.
