If you have a steady hand they're easy to paint around which is what I did. They look sufficiently crazy for Purple Man.

Oh yeah! I'll do whatever I need to to get the desired look that I need/want. For some costumes the only way to do that is to sculpt onto the figure. For instance, Sersi's costume needed sculpt added to get the right look.
