In the late 90's import duty limit was raised to £18. When the recession hit ten years later they sneakily lowered it again to £15. So you can now import considerably less than 20 years ago! Along with the pound dropping because of Brexit (because currency value algorithms are tied to negative / positive headlines) and you can barely get anything imported without being charged (£15 is now about $18). However, these things tend to be more stringently applied on goods coming from the US than Asia. We also have a higher import limit when buying from Europe (for now...). Our system is not fit for purpose. Why pay postage for items that then can be held for ransome until you pay more? And why are you being charged ('handling fees') for someone to open something you don't want opened? And why, when an item is deemed to be above VAT level and chargeable, do you then pay VAT on the value and the shipping? We shouldn't pay VAT on shipping, the import limit should be more like £100, and certain items (those unavailable in the UK) should not be chargeable at all (IE: SDCC exclusives of toys that will never be released over here). There, I've just fixed the system. Unfortunately, I've also just lost HMRC hundreds of millions of pounds, and god forbid we shouldn't be taxed to high hell paying for government largesse, corruption, and cronyistic NGO's! After all, this is the government that just voted to allow governmental bodies access to people's internet history for any reason at all, and then immediately voted to exclude themselves from the same law like the CORRUPT SELF-SERVING SCUMBAGS THEY ARE!
