That's always how it goes with Black Series SDCC exclusives. They're always figures that will see a regular release somewhat later, with something extra added in (plus a special box). There was Boba Fett with the Han in Carbonite, TFA Stormtrooper "preview" (?) version with a special box and booklet, same with Jyn Erso, there was Obi-Wan with the table, Kylo Ren with the burnt helmet and flag/stand, and more.

Depends on what you consider essential. For you, "essential" seems to mean main/prominent characters from the Original Trilogy. For others, essential could mean recognizable Clone Trooper characters, or Imperial trooper variants, or old EU characters (whether brought back into canon or not), or characters from Rebels. You can't determine what's """essential""" for somebody else.
