I think it did promise that. When you show the space jockey in the trailer (especially in the manner it was shown, like it was a reveal), you're making a nonverbal promise. Why do a prequel that is not directly related? Why do a prequel with a being and a ship that look just like the ones the Nostromo encountered? It's pointless.

The biologist messing with lifeforms did bother me quite a bit, it was idiotic.
