other than in the animated Thor: Tales of Asgard movie, has Marvel ever presented Valkyries as a group a la how they are presented in traditional Norse mythology?
Yes to yes-ish.

I believe the first time they're ever mentioned is very early on (Still Journey into Mystery) when they fly Megingjord to Earth to enhance Thors strength after a villain empowered by Loki has trapped Thor.

Brunhilde showed up a few times after that with very little regard to anything; she was a man-hater who took on the Hulk for being male (this may have been part of the Amora storyline, but I don't recall). She was a naive outsider who was like a less competitant Sif. I think next she became interwoven with Enchantress at that point, who played her in a big soap opera plot with Amora about stealing her body and trapping her soul and ended up being merged/bound/disguised as a mortal woman at that point.

Then (if I'm not mistaken) they introduced Brunhilde as part of the Ring cycle retelling as part of Sigmund and Siegfried's story, while Thor was Siegfried, the two fell in love and after the cycle completed, Odin wiped their memories and set Brunhidle to typical Valkyrior work and Thor back to being God of Thunder.

Brunhilde had a short lived plot as Thors Confidant, who was always giving poor advise until (spoiler!) it was revealed she wasn't real and was part of the warriors madness eroding Thors mind.

The Valkyrior (the marvel name for the Valkyries) had a few appearances here and there over the years, they had a bigger part in an Odin and Hela battle over Valhalla and they perform the same actions of their mythological counterparts. After Brunhilde started getting her own stories (and not been a Valkyrie in terms of duties) Valtruata has been the leader of the Valkyries since, though AFAIK she never got her own story, just as part of the group, who from their origin on, performed their duties as redeemers of the worthy dead, just never as the central plot over the years.

The Ultimate Universe had Brunhilde die and become the first Valkyrie in the mythological sense, as after her death she worked out a deal with Hela and would recover the dead to either go to Valhalla or Hel, which also allowed her to leave Hela's domain and see Thor (who was in a rage after her death) to calm him down and occasionally see him after that as I recall.

i'd answer..but i don't even know..i have to count.
(maybe there's a list of them somewhere)
But i started actively collecting them at Hulkbuster and had two already from the ToyBiz Days. since then..been retro collecting a few here and there.
Which are your favs??..which do you think suck??
I checked the Wikipedia entry, which has them all neatly listed.

Toy Biz Sentinel (Times 2 if I recall, they've been in storage for a long time)
Toy Biz Apocalypse (blue)
King Thor
Gladiator Hulk

Wow, for as many years as I've been buying, that I only completed four seems real low.

I did mean to finish the Mandroid, but never got around to getting the last arm and leg. I've thought about going back and getting the cheap figures and completing Hulkbuster as well.
