The 2002/200X MotU series encompasses the best and the worst of trying to revitalize the 80's nostalgia brands. In my opinion, it was probably the best "reboot" of an 80's property that we've seen. It took the original, remained more-than-reasonably faithful to the designs and themes...and then improved on the original in virtually every way. Deeper, more clearly laid out mythology, excellent character designs still readily recognizable as "who they were supposed to be", better action, better animation, etc...

But sadly, it didn't gain much traction with kids, and because of that Cartoon Network started screwing with the scheduling until they basically scheduled it out of existence (they did the same thing with JLU). Why didn't it catch on? Well, possibly because kids had no attachment to begin with, so a large part of what made the 200X series so "cool" to us was utterly lost on the kids.
