First, I would recommend spraying the entire figure with a white primer. I'm not sure how well gold covers but if it's like silver, then it will be difficult to keep the color underneath from showing through.

Second, I wouldn't mess with masking tape. In my experience, it's time consuming and rarely produces a factory clean edge. Take some small, fine tipped paint brushes to carefully paint the edges and a larger, flat head brush to paint the big areas.

Thanks for the tips! I may even farm out the job to a professional customizer, this is one of my toy grails so I don't wanna mess it up
