This is why I advise using a hairdryer over the hot water method. It lets you have more control over where exactly it is you're applying heat which is particularly helpful when only one joint in the middle of the figure is stuck as opposed to having to let the entire figure take a hot bath. It also avoids the chance of water getting caught in figures with hollow parts, which while I don't think there's any real danger to that it's still something I'd like to not happen.
