It is a bit interesting considering Japan is very anti-gun in that it is very hard to own a gun in Japan. It takes a lot of work to be approved and the police have to verify where you keep the gun and ammo which must be stored separately under lock and key. Police will inspect you once a year and a license expires every 3 years so you have to retake the exam. Oh, and handguns are outright banned. If a gunowner dies the relatives have to turn the gun over to the police as it is only registered to the deceased.

Here are the steps compared to the U.S.

United States:
1. Pass an instant background check that considers criminal convictions, domestic violence and immigration status. *Or skip this step, go to a gun show and the gun dealer who wants to make a sale will judge you based on their "impression."
2. Buy a gun.

Japan:
1. Take a firearm class and pass a written exam, which is held up to three times a year.
2. Get a doctor’s note saying you are mentally fit and do not have a history of drug abuse.
3. Apply for a permit to take firing training, which may take up to a month.
4. Describe in a police interview why you need a gun.
5. Pass a review of your criminal history, gun possession record, employment, involvement with organized crime groups, personal debt and relationships with friends, family and neighbors.
6. Apply for a gunpowder permit.
7. Take a one-day training class and pass a firing test.
8. Obtain a certificate from a gun dealer describing the gun you want.
9. If you want a gun for hunting, apply for a hunting license.
10. Buy a gun safe and an ammunition locker that meet safety regulations.
11. Allow the police to inspect your gun storage.
12. Pass an additional background review.
13. Buy a gun.

Generally speaking 10x more people die every day from guns in the U.S. than in an entire year in Japan.

Yet, some people are smart enough to realize just because you own a little plastic toy gun or play video games which use guns doesn't mean you need or want a gun to kill people.

This is a Japanese character from a comic (it's good) by the way.
