That excuse never made sense to me since it should have been an interior shoot that could have been done in a studio, but whatever.... that's what Jackson has always claimed. There's even fake mutilated body parts that were created for the scene that never got filmed. We saw his arm in the scene where Ellie finds it later, but they also created a prop of one of his legs that got bitten off too which was never shown in the movie.

Probably wasn't enough time to reschedule and move production to another studio just to shoot one scene that ultimately wasn't really needed.
