1) Disney didn’t “give him back” the rights, he’d had the rights since the 80s. The deal with Disney was production and distribution with Beatty retaining adaptation rights.
2) The film made three times its budget and won three Academy Awards. The reason the planned trilogy didn’t go ahead is not cos of any hesitation on Disney’s part, but because Beatty felt the studio didn’t promote the picture as heavily as they could/should’ve.
