----------
I started collecting McFarlane Toys Action Figures in June 2021. Since I was late to the game, I have relied on finding old stock sitting in Walgreens stores for characters that are now selling for double or higher their original MSRPs. On one such occasion, I came across the Mortal Kombat Kitana Edenian Blue version. I bought her because there's a general lack of female characters across multiple McFarlane lines. When I returned home, I conducted some research and discovered that she's the
only
female Mortal Kombat character made so far. However, there's a red Battle Kahnun Walmart Exclusive variant. It has a Platinum Edition sticker on the plastic window, though the rest of the box is a re-use of the Edenian Blue release.
The packaging is narrower and slightly thinner than what McFarlane uses for the DC Multiverse line, which I prefer. The DC boxes seem to have a lot of wasted empty space. I understand this allows for McFarlane to use the same box for larger DC characters, but the megafigs have their own boxes anyway.
Kitana's feet are tucked under part of the plastic tray. Otherwise, the factory did not use any plastic ties or tape to secure the figure or the accessories in the tray. There's a circle base stand attached to the red cardboard backing.
McFarlane started selling Fortnite action figures in 2018, Mortal Kombat figures in 2019, and DC Multiverse figures in 2020. All three lines have the same basic articulation system, though the Fortnite figures' hip/thigh areas have straightforward L-shaped gaps. The Mortal Kombat and DC figures have "diapers" that hide the joints (though at the expense of mobility). Also, the Fortnite figures tended to have separate neck pieces, whereas Kitana and many of the DC figures I've bought don't. The arms' upward movement is slightly hindered by the shoulder pads, though this is something that McFarlane addressed when they designed some of the DC figures, such as Golden Eagle Wonder Woman and a couple of the Batmans. The head and upper torso can be rotated 360 degrees. The upper arms can be rotated 360 degrees as well, though as with most figures in the current articulation system, this one doesn't have thigh rotation.
Kitana has decent overall build and paint quality. I even prefer the red version over the blue version that I got because on that one, the eyes and maybe even the eyebrows were not applied properly.
Kitana comes with three accessories: a sai, a folded fan, and an open fan. The sai handle is rather thick, especially when compared to the fans. It fits snugly in Kitana's right hand, but that means the right hand is a little loose if you try to use it for the other two accessories. It's a bit tough squeezing the sai into the left hand; warm water may be required. The accessories may be a source of frustration for some collectors because people frequently use sais in pairs. Also, Mortal Kombat enthusiasts may want to have two open fans to mimic Kitana's video game fighting style. Since this variant is still available on Walmart.com for MSRP, I recommend buying two just so that you can have two of each accessory. (Buying two of the blue version is substantially more expensive now that she's basically sold out everywhere.)
Kitana has an overall height of about 7.10 inches, though if you subtract the high heels and the hair knot at the top of her head, she's really closer to 6.5-inches tall.
Areas of concern:
-- The plastic headband at the back of her head may break if you're not careful.
-- McFarlane seems to have an ongoing problem with boots and the ankle ball joints. Movement of the ankle joints is frequently thwarted by the feet and shin areas.
