While I want to believe this, ever since I started collecting statues and now action figures, I've been shocked by the number of people who say that they don't read comics. Yes, there's no rule that a person has to be familiar with comics in order to buy merchandise, but that means that the market is largely made up of people who are aware of only Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Joker, and Harley Quinn. Beyond that, purchasing decisions are probably based on whether or not someone thinks a character looks cool.

We've already seen what happens when Mattel makes figures based on supporting/secondary characters. Walmart had two exclusive figures as part of the Lex Luthor BAF wave, Harley Quinn and Spoiler (Stephanie Brown). Harley Quinn sold out (no surprise), but Spoiler was clearanced for $5. (Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark) was $5 at Five Below.) I bought Spoiler and think she's great. I hope that McFarlane makes Spoiler and Orphan (Cass Cain) action figures wearing any of their costumes. Will it happen? It's unlikely if even Harley has only 3 versions so far.

For Batman, I did not count the figures that aren't Bruce Wayne or Batmans from alternate worlds/universes. If you include those, the number easily climbs up to 40 or higher.

----------

Number of figures per character (not counting alternate heads/re-paints/variants or megafigs)
(As of February 26, 2022)

Bruce Wayne (Batman): 24
Joker: 8 + 1 from Mortal Kombat (but minus 1 if you don't count New 52 Death of the Family Joker, which is really similar to The Clown Joker)
Clark Kent (Superman): 9
Diana of Themyscira (Wonder Woman): 6
Barry Allen (Flash): 5
Jason Todd (Red Hood): 4
Barbara Gordon (Batgirl): 3
Harley Quinn: 3
Dick Grayson (Nightwing): 2
Damian Wayne (Robin): 2
Oliver Queen (Green Arrow): 2
John Stewart Green Lantern: 2

Lex Luthor: 1.5 (the green and blue suits are very similar, though the blue suit also has a very large chair that's a pretty unique accessory)
Reverse Flash: 1.5 (the Rebirth design is basically a re-paint of Rebirth Flash)

Note: Several of Superman's bodies were used for multiple related characters, such as Red Son and Bizarro.
