Well the plastic of the toy is different since it's the actual product. I suppose you can make an argument from consumerism and buying all of this plastic crap being bad for the Earth, but as of now they can't make action figures let alone most things out of anything else besides plastic. However, the plastic on the packaging on the other hand is just landfill fodder. I know some people keep their boxes, but most do not, and most of the time that nice plastic tray just becomes garbage. So in that case, it's certainly easier to come up with packaging that uses different materials.

Also I'm not sure anyone ever said that cutting the plastic on the packaging was going to keep prices down. I don't think it's that simple.
