whenever the subject if plastic-free packaging comes up, a lot of people point out that there are many larger sources of single-use plastics and that big picture-wise getting rid of the plastic windows/bubbles won't do much so 'why should we get rid of this when nobody is doing anything about that' and so forth. how plastic-free packaging is, in the modern parlance, 'virtue signaling'.

on the other hand, while it is largely separate from our plastic pollution issue, reducing beef consumption would have a very significant impact i.e. not 'virtue-signaling'. yes, if everybody gave up beef tomorrow we'd still have deforestation, we'd still have methane pollution, we'd still have fast-food restaurants specializing in other low-quality foods. but it would be a big step in a better direction.
