I think I saw someone post it on here but it appears to be true that McFarlane tend to release a variant before the classic look, I’ll be playing the waiting game for them all now.
That makes absolute sense, but I'm just the opposite. I have all kinds of classic versions of these characters so I'm just fine with new or different versions. I do like the classic looks more, as it turns out, but I won't shy away from adding designs to my shelf that I didn't even know existed.

When McFarlane got the license, it was hard to imagine what that might look like. I remember talking to a friend, saying, "What would be cool is McFarlane doing like a Twisted DC line, similar to his Christmas and Fairy Tale lines from way before, but trying to picture McFarlane doing something like DC Universe Classics wrecks my brain." As the stars aligned and the DC "Metal" books were all the rage, we almost got something akin to Twisted DC. It has been an interesting journey over the last 3 years to see the line evolve and twist and turn. It has been a slow ride, for sure, but an overall enjoyable one. I know Todd likes things that "look cool" and has said that he didn't want to jump into the line and just make figures that have been made before, some very recently to when he got the license. I can't blame him, really. So, that explains the weird versions we got early. But, I have to think that as someone coming up through the comic ranks in the 80's and 90's that the "classic" looks are "his" DC, you know? I'm sure when he pictures Nightwing, he sees Disco Nightwing, ala George Perez. If I had to guess, I'd say the lack of classic looks is based on a couple things…1. McFarlane wanting to break new ground and put their own mark on the brand (as any company would, I'd imagine) and 2. DC directive. Jim Lee said back in 2020 that the company was "looking and moving forward", so I'm sure, at the time, they were all about pushing "Metal" and "White Knight" and new designs and costumes for their characters, and shelving "the old". Obviously, DC being DC, they made a few missteps along the way and had to course correct for the umpteenth time. Now, they have the Omniverse, where every version of every character is "current" and in canon, so the classic looks are back in a lot of cases, even if it's just flashbacks or backgrounds in new books.

In any case, I'm really satisfied with how the line is shaping up. I'll take the new and weird. I'll take the old and classic. It's all DC to me and I do like some DC.
