My guess at a non-nefarious reason would be that they already had to make the magazine well oversized to accommodate Nerf mags at all and didn't want to make it even larger to accept the rear nub on 18s or risk people permanently jamming bananas in there. But a single mag and no way to get more is absolute utter trash and cheap as all hell. No excuses for that.
I don't want to modify magazines themselves yet that really is looking like the easiest option as even with the magwell trimmed out to fit standard mags, the nub on larger box mags goes directly through some screw posts and I'm not sure how to get around that.
Some good news is that once you trim down the inside edges of the vents so the darts don't catch, you can still fire with the barrel removed. I think that'll be one the easiest accuracy mods for people to do, and once find my chronometer I think we'll see it gives a healthy speed boost.

It defaults to 10 at first, but resets to whatever number you choose after reload until you switch batteries. I've been crawling around inside it so much that I can't be bothered to reset it to 95 after each battery swap no matter how much it bugs me.
