A billion isn’t the settled metric. Not by a long shot. In order to be considered a success, a movie must make its production and expenses back, plus turn a profit for the company. During the pandemic, that was a long shot, since theaters were forcing reduced seating to promote distancing, reduced showtimes, etc.

Every single movie I listed met or wildly exceeded the expectations of the studio and/or the media. But let’s add a few more, just for giggles… Jurassic World Dominion, TopGun Maverick, minions: rise of Gru, and The Batman.

Also, today’s Hollywood definition of “Blockbuster” is any movie with a large production budget, more than one major movie star, and that often have a large box office draw.

Nothing says “makes over a billion worldwide”.
