Every single movie I listed met or wildly exceeded the expectations of the studio and/or the media. But let’s add a few more, just for giggles… Jurassic World Dominion, TopGun Maverick, minions: rise of Gru, and The Batman.
Also, today’s Hollywood definition of “Blockbuster” is any movie with a large production budget, more than one major movie star, and that often have a large box office draw.
Nothing says “makes over a billion worldwide”.
A movie being financially successful, or exceeding expectations is a separate conversation from a movie being a blockbuster.
Thanks for sharing what you’ve found in the way of definitions, but here’s what I found when searching the term:
“How much does a film have to make today to be considered a blockbuster?
In the case of a movie, a blockbuster is understood to generate profits of no less than $100,000,000.00 in United States currency. Generally, this figure must be earned within a relatively short period of time, such as a couple of months.May 18, 2023”
By this definition, Shazam 2, which has made $75mil in profit is nearly at the threshold of being a blockbuster despite also being universally panned. So, yeah, the interpretation seems to be loose, or even subjective.
Keep in mind that I used the term blockbuster as the antithesis of bomb to make a point about subjectivity. You can use whatever standard you want to determine blockbuster, I won’t lose any sleep.
