As other have said, it was kind of a generational thing. Blogger Vintage Geek Culture wrote up a fairly in-depth retrospective on it a couple years ago:

Some interesting anecdotes there, certainly, but I'm not sure I necessarily agree with the arguments or the evidence presented (for example, my recollection is that TNG and TOS aired rather interchangeably in the 90s, at least up here in Canada, and Playmates' range of TOS-inspired action figures, starships and role-play toys was nothing if not extensive).

Don't forget he also got passed over for the resident GL spot in the Justice League cartoon in favour of ambulatory plank-of-wood John Stewart (even though Kyle had previously featured in the Batman/Superman cartoon crossover comics that preceded Justice League). Talk about adding insult to injury...

Good read. My intro to GL was John Stewart in the JL/JLU cartoon and yeah he was boring as shit. I didn't get into it until I read Rebirth where they reintroduced Hal and made him cool like Captain Kirk (which is why Hal's my guy) and I've been a fan ever since.
