This was was less Kickstartery than most too. All of the tooling and box layout and all that was done before launch. Unlocks were haphazard to generate hype, not set based on actual money goals laid out in the beginning. Seems like production was already underway with tooling and all of it. Basically this thing was getting made, and all the weapons were getting made. Kickstarter was just the online store.
I'm ok with companies doing crowdfunds for things that don't fit at mass retail. Doesn't have to be Barge/Unicron level. The TF Japanese pieces are good examples, I'd bet not a lot of Target shoppers want a 250 dollar Japanese Transformer from the 80s.
That being said, they could just make them exclusives. But there is risk there that I guess they don't want to take. If it's a stinker, they eat it.
