For a while I have been buying a lot of Silver Age books and I find them to be quite enjoyable. They all have pretty enjoyable even with the corn that you find inside. I like the FF and Spiderman but I think the biggest surprise to me has been Journey into Mystery.

I am getting Tales to Astonish 49 Christmas (wife asked me which one I would like the most) where Ant Man becomes Giant Man. I look forward to it.

My LCS has a great selection of Silver Age books available so it makes me happy. I have a copy of FF 49(second part of Galactus) in my box for after the first.

Anyone else like these books or hunting for anything?

If you like Spidey there are some good books in the 40's and fifties. I am doing a lot Marvel masterworks right now as they are cheaper but it's nice to have the book in my hands. I am looking at a key FF right now but it's $198. Dying for it to tell the truth.

If you have the $$$ then go for it.

I saw a trade, Marvel Firsts; the 60's, I almost picked up which had all the first appearances.

I am only getting it because the comic store owner is letting me pay over a while, might take 2 or three months.

The real problem with Silver Age stuff is the cost. I know I have to look at it before I buy. The best way to get the books are Marvel Masterworks and you can get them cheap on Amazon and ebay.

Do you collect in order to own the actual book released back then or because you like to read the stories and look at the artwork?

I would prefer the actual book. i like the way the paper feels, the way it smells and the ads inside. But I have to do with the collections for now.

Yes it is but it is a key issue. I bought avengers 7 for 190 back in the summer. (took me 4 months) I felt it was worth it too. the FF is 2nd appearance of Galactus.

Man-, and I say this as a friend:
CHECK YOUR LIBRARY!

Mune has a TON of trade paperbacks- Masterworks softcovers from Giant size X-Men through the Dark Phionex saga, Omnibus editions of Doctor Strange and Ghost rider and a bunch of xiles trades which kick ass!

Really, if you're in it for the story, check the library.

If you want an incredible story- check the 70's Adam Warlock stuff- Jim Staerlin's work there is amazing- lush art and wild stories with Adam, Thanos, Gamora and Pip- in a team up!

Ada, must defeat the Magus, his evil future self and the Magus;s intergalactic Church Of Universal Truth- his allies- a degenerate troll, the most dangerous woman in the galaxy and Thanos, the mad titan.

Super badass.

Dude- the Warlock stuff from back then will make him your favorite character- he's such a badass but tragic too- doomed.
You get to see that Gamora was raised by Thanos as his adoptive daughter/assassin and that for all Pip's...letcherous nature...he's always got adam's back.
Thanos becomes Adam's ally against the Magus and they have this odd respect thing that borders of friendship in places.

And of course, they all get horribly killed. So there's that.

Read Infinity Gauntlet- that's what the two-pack stuff is all about.
All you need know about that is that Death had ressurected Thanos to kill half the population of the universe (a monumental task!), so Thanos beat down or killed the Elders of the Universe, took their infinity gems (which they did not understand anyway) and thus starts the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries.

Then read Annihilation.
The best miniseries of all time, right there.

Then read Guardians of the Galaxy- that series is FREAKIN AMAZING and most of the issues are still cover price! It's so overlooked!

THEN real Thanos Imperative- that way you get the whole story of what leads up to that miniseries!

if you can, read War of Kings too for incredible action and seriously SERIOUSLY brutal fights- Gladiator in particular kicks total ass there. The Imperial Guard stomping the Inhumans into paste is worth the trade all by itself.
That mini takes place after GotG starts but before Thanos Imparative.

Also, when you read Thanos Imparitive: Ignition, keep in mind that i own the original artwork (by Brad Walker) for page #19!

Read all of Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest. and Guardians. Also read War of Kings and Realm of Kings. I love all that awsome stuff. Forgot to get Thanos Imperative when it was all said and done too. It is glad to know I am not TO far behind on my Cosmic Marvel.

I cannot remember the character name, but he comes in a comic pack with a guy with red hair in a pony tail.

for my silver age fix and my lack of intense funds needed to build a collection of single issues, i have a decent sized library of those phonebook sized essential books. I know its not in color but the inkwork remains and is just as good.

Yesh- those BW bricks kick ass.

Really though- Marvel obviously has the inked pages (or high res scans of them) so why not give us newly computer colored versions of the old stuff in Masterworks?
I'd certainnly buy the hell out of old Avengers issues with new colors- and the Byrne run on FF would be sick insane!

I know I have a couple trades under the tree, I think they are Marvel Masterworks. My wife was looking at the ones I have and asking questions.

Jason the comic store I go to has FF 66 the origin of Him before he becomes Warlock among others.

I do want the collections but if I can get the real books more the better. Of course I don't have the money for all of it so I settle for trades. I might have to look at some of the Warlock stuff. I did enjoy the Infinity War and Warlock and the Infinity Watch when it was out.

Infinity Watch was the perfect example of Marvel putting the WORST artists on what should have been a top seller- it's like they make some titles to fail. so weird.

Yeah- I know about FF 66. I actually have one that's a rag- barely held together.
Many years ago (in 91, I think), I was hanging out in a comic store with my best pal (he worked there) and this guy came in with a paper sack- an old grocerery bag so worn as to be like cloth.

The guy wanted an estimate on how much these old comics might be- he had maybe a hundred old comics there worth maybe five grand- first X-Men, Avengers, silver age Batmans, first Thor appearance, etc.

We were looking at each other like "we could take this guy fora ride", but instead we were square with him- we gave honest estimates on everything.

Turned out the guy's brother had just died and those comics were from his childhood- sad damn story.
Anyway, we bagged and boarded the stuff just to be cool and he let us pick a comic each for ourselves- both of us took super ratty comics instead of anything of value- my pal rob got Nick Fury's first appearance and I got Warlock's.
I still have taht in a hard mylar in my "Prize Box" along with my mint Iron Man #1 and all sorts of other crazy stuff.

If you're looking for a comic that kicks ass and will always go up in value, get Iron Man #55- I bought mine back when no one knew about it (as part of my run of Iron Man- 1-300!).
It's a little story by Jim Starlin, back when he was only writing part time and, though he had all these great ideas, Marvel had never given him a shot...then called him to write and draw a fill in issue of Iron Man, so he figured "What the hell, I'll never get work from thee guys again anyway" and introduced Thanos, Drax, Mentor, eros (Starfox) and Moondragon.

That's a lot for one filler issue!

The rest is comic's history!

How was the story? If the story wasn't inspiring enough the artwork would suffer as well.

Honestly, I dropped the book almost right away- the story was pretty awful- the premie of the book being that no one knew the Infinity Watch ahd the gems and not even they knew who had the Reality Gem (in case they got mind read or tortured) but right away a character that Warlock killed in the 70's shows up and makes a grab for the gems.

The first few issues had bad art...and after that it's like they got some drunken hobo with broken hands and bad vision to draw the thing.

And they introduced a character called Maxim to the team 9which is hilarious now since that crappy magazine is what you'd think of).

Yeah.

It's so bad that Marvel has never put in into trade format- and those hucksters will make a trade out of any damn run!

This is how bad the art got:

on the plus side, they had a story wherein Thor got the Power Gem, went totally nsne from it and tried to kill every-damn-one. He was unstopable.
It also had Thanos fight Odin (he lost badly there).
But that art was just as bad- Marvel art in the mid-90's was the worst in it's entire history.
