I don't know if a thread exists for this topic as of yet.

So I'm sure you all can relate to this as collectors/enthusiasts. You buy a new action figure or a vehicle...it came in such a cool box or on a cool card with great art work on it. You can't keep in Mint in box...ya gotta open it...you enjoy the toy, it looks great on your shelf displayed...but now what do you do with the box/card????
When I was a child I threw the majority of those cards and boxes away...then as I grew older I started to keep the boxes and cards...but why??? UPC's they sometimes are used as incentives to mail in for a special figure, but how long are they good for? Would Hasbro or Mattel take UPC's from toys purchased a few years back from the same line? does it make sense to keep this extra clutter??? I see sometimes people sell just the boxes or card backs on ebay, do people actually buy these?!?

I do enjoy reading the bio's on the back and looking at the art work, but with the internet pretty much all of that is available to look at online....and how often do I look through piles of card backs anyway?

So I ask you...is it Trash or Treasure???

you can't play or pose packaging, so its trash once they are OPEN.

my two cents.

i dont think theres any real answer to this. This has been debated before on here with no winner. But a large concern to keeping the boxes is space. That stuff adds up if you dont have the room for storage on top of having product to display.

I'm mainly a MOC collector. But if there's something I can open w/out ruining the package in anyway. I'll keep it to place the figure back in when I'm done displaying it. This really only works for boxed toys/figs. Blister cards are pretty difficult to open w/out ruining. I did manage to safely remove Fantomex & Iron Man from their cards so I hung on to them.

God forbid something happen and someone needs to sell of their figs. You might be able to snag an extra few bux just buy having some decent package to keep the item in, sealed or not.

I have boxes FULL of old card backs from Star Wars, GI Joe, DCUC, Marvel Legends, Marvel Universe, Minimates, Super Hero Squad (marvel, DC, Star Wars, Transformers, Gi Joe), Mighty Muggs, WWE legends, Comic packs, vehicle boxes, Beast Boxes, and I can't even think of all the smaller lines like Spider-man, captain america, tron, hulk, Halo, etc etc.

Originally my thought process was to hold on to them and if and when the day comes that I have to sell my collection, I'd sell it with the card back. But at this point...space is an issue. Do people actually buy these on ebay?!? I'm thinking its time to toss 99% of it away.

MOC is one thing...obviously the idea is to keep the card mint and protected...but I'm taking blister cards and everything else. I always use a blade to cut the plastic and get into the box/card as neatly as possible...nothing gets put back in their boxes...if they come out they stay out. therefore the cardboard is all trash no?? the more and more i think about it the more I'm ready to have a bonfire of card backs. I still have them saved from Ghostbusters, Super Powers, Masters of the Universe, original G I Joes, X-men, secret wars, etc etc...what for?

Maybe you should take a look around before you think loose figures have no value. Ahh to be young & dumb..
You also totally missed the question at hand.

I'm sure they said that in the 80's too. Point isn't that the packages are valuable now. But say in 15,20,30,50 years. Yes I believe packages from today will have some value.

I keep some boxes, for the sake storing accesories and transit (if we move). And I literally have a wardrobe full of boxes. So the only cardbacks I would keep is if the figure is staying MOC. I really should throw out those matty mailer boxes, before my room looks like that horders show

I need some MOTU Matty mailers for my first issue figs that came w/out mailers. I'd gladly pay shipping plus a lil extra for your time for say a dozen of them.

I never understood how you can remove the plastic from the card, I wanted to do this to keep the card backs but always end up ripping part of it no matter how careful I am. Anyone know how this is properly done?

I don't care about saving cards for monetary value, I keep them because I like them. Most boxes I will get rid of but I like looking at the cardbacks from time to time. Reminds me of when I was younger and there was no internet. Looking on the back of the card was like being on Toyark around SDCC.

I kept a whole bunch of cardbacks for the art, toy descriptions, etc. on the front and back. Plus keeping UPC's pay off sometimes. Example: I bought a bunch of Movie Masters and Target box sets for TDKR when they first came out. I started opening them after SDCC and noticed the little stickers on the blister packs. Went online, added a bunch of codes and UPC's up and boom! Free TDKR tickets for me and the Mrs.! Saved like $30!

I keep my boxes for rare and exclusive stuff that I open, or bigger boxes. Transformers, for instance, Amazon Unicron and most recently SDCC Bruticus, Masterpiece boxes, Voaygers. I do keep the card backs from blister cards, but throw the blister itself away for both MU and Transformers. 'Course, I am new to this and I don't have a decades worth of cards and boxes. I say through them in a tote, store it, and if you need them, they are there. Now the question is, do you flatten the boxes for more room or not??

People do sell boxes for old toys, and if in great condition, go for some money for completist out there. (Who knows what current toys will do though.)

Edit: Ahem (Who knows what current toys will do that are not rare and exclusive items though.)

And seriously, don't start some age discrimination thing. How does not owning expensive loose figures make me dumb? And yeah don't call me dumb, okay?
So what is the question at hand that I missed? Do you mean the main topic? Well I was not talking about that, I was talking to you.

I will be going now, dusting the loose figures you know. The figures that I wont have to sell. No one can make me do that, and there will be no reason to anyway. Positive thinking is good after all.

To the thread starter, sorry this is kinda off topic. But I am sure if you were called dumb you would do the same.

Perhaps dumb was a bit harsh. I think naive & ignorant fit better. I didn't say anyone would force you to sell your figures. But one day, you might not have mommy & daddy's roof to live under and god forbid you reproduce, but you might fall on hard times and need to get rid of some shit to feed your family. I know things like that don't occur to kids, but it's a fact that shit happens. Also, no one mentioned your figures directly. It was spoken in general & just because you don't have any loose figures worth anything doesn't mean the rest of us don't.

And your original post you answered as if the question was to open your figures or keep them MOC. The question was AFTER you open them, do you discard the packages or keep them. Don't want people to call you dumb? Then comprehend & think before you speak or type.

Allow me to reiterate to keep my post somewhat on topic. If I can open the package and remove the figure w/out damaging the package, yes I will keep it to store my figure in later on.

If you plan on tossing them. I'd at least try putting them as a lot on ebay with a .99 starting bid and see what happens. Anything is better than nothing.

true...your right. I may kick myself in 20 years when some dude in the middle of nowhere who purchased them makes a small fortune off them LOL in some bizarro world where the cards are worth more than the figures inside!

That's the thing tho. So many people toss the packages, which makes them more rare than what was inside. Like I said in an earlier post, they probably wont be worth much until 20,30 years from now. But each year that passes and each person that throws theirs away just makes yours a lil more rare and valuable each time.

And damn, I give up with trekking. It's like talking to a wall. lmao
