This is not a poll,

I wanted to try a different approach to these discussions this time. Since it's my opinion that in the never ending battle of the major Comic Entertainment Franchises that is Marvel vs DC as it exists in pop culture today, it's arguable that the two flagship properties of each brand respectively being represented most successfully are Spiderman and Batman.

These characters just seem to resonate extremely well with audiences world wide so that got me wondering. How well would the future successors to these well respected heroes be received by the general public if a movie was ever made and why? Who's stories do you prefer and why?

And of course...because they really are fun to discuss, who would you pick in a scrap between the two?

I personally prefer Batman Beyond to Spiderman 2099, mostly because I loved the animated series (and am wearing the batman beyond shirt as I write this) although I'm not inclined to believe he could take Miguel in a fight. I would love to see a Batman Beyond movie one day and I feel like it would be a better sell than Spiderman 2099.

I honestly have not much experience with Miguel. The only thing I've ever read he was in was Exiles... and by the time he joined the team it was far from a remarkable and memorable book. (I read X-Men 2099 I think almost until the book died. Didn't care about Spiderman, or many other marvel books outside of X-Men at that time)

So, I can't make much of an informed decision on who would win in a showdown.
But I think it all breaks down to which timeline are we talking about for Terry? We've seen him as a fresh rookie, and an experienced pro (By the time he finds out Bruce is his father). Depending on which timeline we use I thoink would effect the outcome.

Rookie Terry, if he's cut off from Bruce I think wouldn't stand a chance. What little I've seen of Miguel is he's more experienced, and has a quicker learning curve.
However, when we get to adult Terry, I think they would be much better matched, and this is the fight I don't feel I'm in a position to call.

Im gunna have to say Terry. Me and Jetty are likely gunna get lynched for this. But Migeal is just so ho hum to me (even though I really want the 6" one) he may be the most popular but he was like the least interisting 2099 character to me.

I have no experience with Miguel so I can't add my two cents. I'm only familiar with the ever popular Terry McGinnis.

Same here, I'd have to pick McGinnis purely on the fact I know squat about O'Hara... That said, I love the design of Spidey 2099 a lot, so that's a point in his court!

I fault no one here for being more knowledgeable on McGinnis than O'Hara. Its clear he's the more popular of the two in this discussion and I agree with what most have said so far.

But why is it that so few of us are all that knowledgeable about O'Hara? is it because there was no cartoon series dedicated to him? I'd be lying if I didn't admit to only being aware of him prior to Shattered Dimensions video game only through his image on a comic book cover my friend owns.

I enjoyed playing as him in the shattered dimensions game, and haven't even bothered with the new game because of bad reviews that turned me away and I like the MU figure I own.

However, none of those things make him all that appealing, character wise in comparison to McGinnis. But then again, I recognize how unfair that comparison is given what I claim to know.

I was hoping there'd be some O'Hara fans in here that would be able to debate this and recommended reading material in the process. It seems most on here share a similar opinion on here in favor of McGinnis so far.

I enjoyed reading Spiderman 2099 as a kid, and the fact that Miquel was not associated with Peter Parker other than in name only. I hated what they did to him in Exiles. I am actually in the other boat, as I know very little about Batman Beyond past a few cartoons I saw.

Nice. I think I'm going to do some reading on him tonight on Marvel Digital so I can make a more informed decision. Maybe I'll end up liking him.

What else did you like about Miguel and this take on Spiderman?

I think a lot of it comes down to accessibility. Batman Beyond is a lot more accessible than Spiderman 2099.

O'Hara has barily been in anything outside of his own book, which was cancelled almost 15 years ago, and I don't think has been collected and rereleased TPB style (At least not recently). The only thing he's been in of any relevence recently was one or two games.

Terry however was in a popular cartoon, and made a few appearances in two other popular cartoons (Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Static Shock). Plus, Batman Beyond has been airing daily on the Hub, making him even more accessible to a whole new generation of fans.
THEN factor in the fact that Batman Beyond recently got it's own mainstream comic.

So, Miguel really has absolutely no outlet to reach people who didn't read his comic back in the day.
And I think it's that simple, why Terry is so much better known, and so much more popular. Hell, in this day and age, not a lot of people even know there was a Marvel 2099.

Is this from the comic series version of Batman Beyond? I haven't read that yet but am borrowing the series from a close friend soon. I hear great things about it. I only remember him as a rookie learning the ropes from an old Bruce Wayne in the cartoon.

Again, I will be posting more opinions on this after I've read more on both soon.

This is the damn truth. I passed on the 2099 series back in the day because I was all about the X-men and Batman with little interest in anything else as a kid. I blame 90's cartoons. That's what got me into comics.

I did like Spiderman, and now that I think of it I think the reason why I passed on Spiderman 2099 in the comic store was because I thought it was the same thing as the terrible "Spiderman Unlimited" cartoon that came on in the late 90's. I had no idea it was anything different as a kid.

No, Terry appeared a couple times in Justice League and JLU as an adult. He was still guided by the old man, but he had much more experience under his belt by then.
The comic seems to pick up sometime a little after the Batman Beyond tv series ended.

I actually started reading the Batman Beyond comic, but for some reason it just dropped off my watch list... I might have to look back into it, there's very little else DC that I wanna read at the moment! ^^;

But while I'm at it, I might look into finding any old 2099 comics too... I did like the concept behind Spidey, but I never went much farther than that. Does anyone know if there's a collected works out there?

I got to go with 2099. With the powers he has, I wouldn't say could "easily" beat Batman, not even close. Terry has the training, as Spider-Man has the super powers. But on the fact that I have read a lot of 2099, and hated Batman Beyond as a kid, and still don't care for him, my vote goes to Spider-Man of the year 2099, naturally. As for a movie I would like to see, Spider-Man 2099 would take the cake again, mainly because I trust Marvel Studios over WB...

Spider-Man 2099 TPB (2009) comic books

This is all I'm aware of.

I'm going to go with Spidey because Marvel doesn't seem very good at making movies that aren't well recieved.

Beyond has more potential though. I'm thinking Blade Runner with Eastwood as Bruce.

Who's with me?

Hard for me to say, because I don't know much about Miguel aside from his costume looking bad ass. Terry was no slouch though, the man himself, Bruce Wayne taught him.

Based on the accumulated responses so far, it seems like CJ hit the nail on the head for why Terry is just so much more accessible than Miguel. Marvel's recent Spiderman video games seem to be indications that they want to give the character further exposure to a larger and newer audience, but I still feel like there isn't much in the current comics to read more about beyond the series from the 90's that's been referenced.

Am I wrong about this? Is there more available Spiderman 2099 fiction to explore beyond what this thread has already referenced?

Spider-Man 2099 Vol 1 - Marvel Comics Database
He makes appearances in other 2099 comics, obviously.

To talk about toys for a second...I think we need a Hulk 2099...

Whoa, that kind of reminds me of Ultimate Green Goblin though. Another figure I hope we get for MU BTW.
