When debuting their Jurassic Park/World/Legends line, Mattel surprised a lot of collectors with the sheer volume of dinosaurs, vehicles, and figures in different scales.

I hope they do some Top Gun figures and one or two vehicles in 3.75 inch scale. It would be a welcomed sight for JOE fans since Hasbro has put their GI Joe line on hiatus.

As for Maverick’s F-14 cameo, a museum shot of his old fighter jet or flashbacks from his days flying it are potential scenes.

Keeping costs low / sales high, consider the following. Allow kids the responsibility of "You-Build-It-Together." It keeps these big 1:18 scale jets' manufacturing cost low / prices more affordable.

Further reducing cost, 1 out of every case of 4 jets; can be an "UnPainted Custom" with a very basic sticker sheet. Kids can then be creative and "taught" how to customize such jets with their own squadron livery; real or imagined. Mattel's own YouTube or Instagram can then have kids of all ages show off their "custom" jets. Again, decrease cost, increase sales / kids creativity.

Hasbro's many many many TransFormer fans can buy a 1:18 scale F-15 Eagle "UnPainted Custom." Why? So those TF fans can paint it in Starscream's colors a la the toy of Goose's kid.

Mattel can then perhaps give a couple of big F-15s (in both NASA and Bicentennial livery colors which is closest to Starscream's livery) and have it seen in the sequel. Just like the Goldbergs tv show, that featured brand spanking new TransFormer toys; somehow magically sent back in time to its episodes set in the 1980s!

Ed Duncan of Mattel gave some truly enlightening facts on why 3.75 inch (aka 1:18 scale) is a great toy scale. It helped Mattel win thee "Toy of the Year" award for another movie line Jurassic World. Thus if Duncan applies this same wisdom, in a shared wishful hope of it being another award winning movie toyline, Mattel will likely use its very successful 3.75 inch scale.

CHASE VARIANT VEHICLES? A concern is how big toys need to sell. So I'm thinking of the need for a healthy offering of chase variants. Can be crazy like a "Matty the Mascot" chase variant. Instead of the "Maverick" name on the canopy, its "Matty" with a red jet, similar to Maverick's blue jet. Barbie can likewise rock a pink
version . Or do a fun 80s style "Retro 8 Bit" paint job with almost any livery (as seen below). Such variants should be challenging yet not too hard to find. Chase variants along with Unpainted Customizable blank jets, can both keep product moving.

^ I remember like a decade ago my local anime shop used to have these Japanese import blind box 1:114 scale plastic model kits... I think the brand was Doyusha J-Wings or something... anyway one set was just all the different F-14s with different paint schemes and tail insignias, but they were all based on real plane versions. Everything was pre-painted and put together... except you just had to cut out the tail fin part and missiles and glue those parts on.

And then each box set had 8 or 10 blind boxes and one chase paint scheme per box... I remember buying some and getting the chase version which was this scheme: http://i564.photobucket.com/albums/s...pseajcamwp.jpg and being so happy. LOL. I wish I still had them. I remember my anime shop only had series 2 though and series 1 had all the cool paint schemes like the Jolly Rogers and the all black F-14.

Hopefully all the cool paint jobs you missed out on in series 1 will have a few made by Mattel and in 1:18 scale!

Hasbro got a retailer to help pay for its big G.I.Joe "Hall of Fame" 12 inch Duke figure in 1991. In return, that retailer got 1st dibs selling that figure as an exclusive. To make a wide variety of jets, this can be an option. Yet a lot of exclusives get clearanced. And, a lot of collectors wait till clearance. Because of this, retailers sometimes cancel orders of thee ENTIRE toyline, in its entirety!

To avoid this, heed the wisdom, of Marty Abrams of the once great Mego. Make only "enough" exclusives. Reason why his new Mego exclusives are selling, is because he only made "enough" to sell. If the blue branded Walmart can assist in a Blue Angels C-130 nose segment; make just enough to sell. Kohls can also do a very festive Holiday colored exclusive. Future releases (in different paint jobs) can be made for other stores. Yet to create demand the 1st few must be made in smaller numbers as an exclusive,

So long as it matches the scale / sculpt of "Elite Force" by BBi then I think Mattel can definitely make some great toys.

A tale exist among traditional toymakers in the former Holy Roman Empire. The more complicated (e.g. electronic) the toy the more kids can get bored. The Indominis toy can do without the electronics. Instead, as pointed in an earlier post, the bigger better Brachiosaurus is the "simply" bigger better toy. (Free from electronics). Keep it simple.

I saw the TRU True Heroes C-130 at Target all repackaged and repainted under a different brand... thought that was pretty interesting. I never did get the one at TRU... even when it was clearanced for cheap.

Agreed, that tiny C-130 is "cheap" and its so off scale / so off in sculpt.

I'll pay for quality in a sharply sculpted / 1:18 scale "Dis-Play" set of just the nose segment. Like the segment of the highly-sought-after Kenner Death Star Dis-Play set, its just a segment. A "cheaper" paper version of a complete Death Star, is passed upon all the time; despite being free to print on your own printer!

If its a quality-made nose segment; then the quality of nose art can also be more noticeable. Hopefully Barbie's huge collector base will notice (and help with sales). Mattel's superb designers like Robert Best can then grace his art on a plethora of chase variants / nose segments,

^ IMO the True Heroes Apache and Raptor were awesome though for their relatively cheap price (especially on sale)... the other vehicles, not so much. Except the Chinook was kinda awesome too, I mean it didn't look that great, but was incredibly fun to play with. And if IRCC the Chinook had 3 different paint jobs.

A couple of months ago a local specialty shop had the 1:18 BBI Cosair, P51 Mustang and Hellcat and a WWII German plane I didn't recognize... all MIB for $75 each... I was so tempted. I hadn't seen those 3.75" scale BBI airplanes in like 10+ years. I couldn't pull the trigger on any of them though... just didn't have the room for planes that big anymore. A couple days later someone bought them all.

EDIT: They even had a 1:18 scale F-14... not sure what brand it was, but it was the super fancy, highly detailed Jolly Rogers version still in the huge box. I think it was the version in the above pic with the Sky Striker on top... not sure though. I didn't see a price tag for it, but someone must have bought it because I never saw it again when I went back to see if they had put a price on it.

Love this idea and the build a set idea. If they do a carrier, I hope they make it modular; where you can expand or limit it size and maintain scale detail. A section of the flight deck or bridge would be better than doing what Hasbro did with the helicarrier.

Hopefully, the figures will scale well with modern Joes and MU.

That F-14 by JSI / Merit brand, is pretty huge. It might be Mattel's "Brachiosaurus" of the TOPGUN movie line! So maybe its a huge toy that should be a 2nd year release? Or even 3rd year release (to slowly build the line) to give lesser jets a chance to sell. Whatever helps Mattel make it last for a long time.

I hope kids + collectors love its (hopefully) detailed sculpt / customisable quality! Just like 3M, Mattel can team up, with Staples or Office Depot. Either store can have available; a perfect "texture" matching, color coordinating - corrugated sheet - to sell as a roof. Kids can then easily customize that corrugated sheet, to make the roof / overall building to any size we like,

So I just rewatched the trailer. Everyonw is expecting a flashback scene with the Tomcat. But what if it's not flashback. There is still one country flying the F-14. It's got a good number of mountains.
