Brave Maximus is half the cost and just as cool. I decided to save about $400 and go the repaint route.

Good thread.

Transformers would be star scream, soundwave, devastator and megatron.

GI Joe would be storm shadow

Marvel would be the toy biz ice man.

We were a single-income working class family, and my folks weren't always able to get us everything we wanted, but my grandfather completely spoiled us.

I was lucky to have all sorts of GI Joe & Cobra vehicles (Skystriker, Dragonfly, Tomahawk, Raven, Moray, Vamp, Whale, Snow Cat, Asp, a few APCs, and even the USS Flagg) to share with my two brothers, but I really wanted a Fang, Rattler, HISS Tank, Sharc, Sky Hawk, and a Stinger. I used to think the Rattler was soooooo cool with the little replaceable fuselage panels that showed battle damage.

Looking back, we did get a lot of the stuff at garage sales and they may have been missing pieces, but in retrospect I can see I had absolutely nothing to complain about and had way more toys than a whole lot of other kids.

I think it's time to call the folks again just to say "thanks."

Well this here is something I DID GET when I was younger. Bear in mind, I'm not that old whatsoever so the figure I'm going to mention isn't that old either. Many Christmas' ago all I wanted was an X-Men Classics Colossus. Back then, and to this date, Colossus is my all time favourite X-Man. When I went to Walmart, Toys R Us, and all those stores I didn't find a single X-Men Classics Colossus. So, being at the age, I got extremely upset and told my mom to not bother. She won't find one. So come Christmas day, my mom came into my room and I opened my stocking. There was an X-Men classics figure, but it was a gimmicky Cyclops. I told my mom I wasn't upset, because I loved the fact that she tried. She was extremely proud of me, so proud she let me open up ONE figure from underneath the Christmas tree before everyone else was up. And surely enough, that one figure was Colossus. My mom went from city to city trying to find one, and surely enough, she found ONE SINGLE Colossus. We haven't seen another since. My mom is bad ass.

Id have to say grew up also with working class family but as an only child my mom i think spent most of her disposable income on me ... the woman is a saint ... I had almost everything from He-man and GiJoe my main collections ... the big things things a didnt get were G1 Megatron and Shockwave , Skystriker and the Joe holy trinity of TD, Flagg, Defiant and an AT-AT .... at this point in my life i just need a Flagg and to finish piecing together my Defiant

The toy I never got as a child was the Star Wars Death Star playset made by Kenner. I remember the TV commercials for it showing the various features like the "exploding" laser cannon and the trash compactor with the foam "trash" and the monster. It sure looked like fun on those ads.

Nowadays when I occasionally look at them on various websites they're priced extremely high if they're MIMB. The lower priced examples quite often are missing pieces like the "rope" accessory over the retractable bridge or have broken struts. Sometimes the cardboard inserts are pretty rough too.

The problem is I want both decos, and own neither. I want Fort Max to go with my G1 collection and Grand Max to go with my RiD collection. But Grand didn't get released until I was in my 20's, so I wasn't exactly a kid by that point (hence only mentioning Fort Max).

That's awesome. You should thank your mom again when you get the chance.

I wasn't allowed to have ANY Star Wars figures b/c my father was (rightfully) offended by the sheer exploitation of it all. I'm glad he wasn't around for the amount of crap that came out for the prequels.

However, I otherwise had a bunch of pretty sweet toys, like a ton of Shogun Warriors, lots of GoDaikin toys, and I was the first on my block w/an Optimus Prime (I remember telling my friends about it -- the cartoon wasn't even on yet, so no one knew what it was).

My brother and I had a lot of Joe figures and vehicles but we were never aware of the USS Flagg. I know we could have gotten our grandparents to buy it for us for X-Mas if we had seen it. I don't ever recall seeing that or the Terrordrome. I'm sure I passed it in a store but just didn't realize it.

What do you mean by exploitation? I didn't realize Star Wars was offensive lol
