Posted this in the catch all thread, but I don't know if it has frequent traffic, so I just decided to start a thread, if its unneccesary then mods are welcome to come in and do as they see fit.

Ok sorry if its been explained before, but me and my brother want to start on transformers, but I am very confused on to where to start, seeing as there are multiple different lines I.e generations, RID and all that.

So my question is where would I start, assuming I only want can I say ? Comic based? Or cartoon based? Sorry I'm very new at Transformers. But I have NO interest in movie line like DotM or RotF, I'm interested in like the war for cybertron type or the classic one.
Any ideas? And if so are they still available? Or do I gotta trade in my arm. Also I'm a big fan of the dinobots, so was wondering if they have rereleased them? Or is it the old ones I must get, also as far as articulation goes? Is it full motion with the arms and legs for the old one? Or just basic move arm up and down type?
Sorry again for being such a "noob" lol but yea any kind of insight would help me a lot, instead of me just standnin in the toy line dumbfounded, or searching online with no results.
Plz and thank you.

Hey no worries, I myself have just started collecting Transformers recently, and yes they may cause you an arm and a leg, depending what figure you want and if you want loose or MOSB. The best suggestion I can say is to hit the sister sight TFW2005. That's where I went to get more info.
The only reissue that I know of on the Dinobots is Masterpiece Grimlock which was released 2010 if I remember correctly. The movie lines aren't bad though, although ROTF has better figures and selection than the DOTM and the first movie.
RID is strictly from Transformers Prime, so if you like that series you'll like the figures.

I'm a huge transformers collector and yeah it's gonna be pricey. If you want g1/comic based then I suggest looking into the classics/universe/generations line. Word of warning though classics are priced very high but generations is the most recent line so they won't be too high. Like mentioned above I think Masterpiece Grimlock has been the only dinobot reissue.

Do some research. What got me into collecting TFs, other than G1, was how the figures looked. Check out Welcome to TFU.INFO The Alpha Trion and Omega Prime of Transforming Toys - www.tfu.info They have pictures of a large portion of various lines. See what you like and go from there.

What are you more into?
G1,diecast metal, and reliving the 80s? ---->you gotta go G1 or G1 Reissue
Hyper detail, gimicks, size? ---> Go Masterpiece Series
Medium size, full articulation ---> Classics/Generations
Or, tiny ones for the desk? ---> World's Smallest TF/ TF Legends

It depends on what you want and how much $$$ you want to spend.

Based on your post so far, and the fact you want Dinobots, I would say you want G1. Not too many Dinobots in Classics if i remember right.

You want to collect the "Classics" line. Classics was the name of this line years ago, but it's also known as "Universe," "Generations," and "Reveal The Shield."

The cheapest way to start is to hit Walmart or Target and get whatever Generations figures they have on the pegs. You might see Wheeljack (must have), Kup, Warpath, and maybe even a Thundercracker, still on the pegs. Grab them because once they're done in retail the prices tend to climb. After that, go hit eBay.

I would recommend registering over on tfw2005.com and browsing the B/S/T forums. Lots of people have been selling classics lately. They can be expensive on the secondary market. I would recommend, besides buying the generations you can still find at retail, that you make a list of your favorite characters. Focus on this list as opposed to just buying up any classic characters. Check ebay completed listings to get an idea of prices and try not to spend more than that.

Posted a response in the Catch-All thread that pretty much sums up my thoughts on it. But definitely hit up the BST threads here and our sister sites. Especially TFW. It's a much more affordable method than Ebay or the like.
