They aren't going out of business. They're filing for bankruptcy protection while they restructure their debt. They are specifically going with Chapter 11, which has an end goal of shedding or extending payments for debt while allowing them to remain in operation. They are looking to emerge from the process with better payment terms for their debt and to remain in business.

hey im just the middle man...by the way, asking 'how old are you' in a Toy forum is a oxymoron.

I think they will eventually end up like KayBee... limp along for a few years as a crappier version of themselves and then... kaput. I

Many years ago TRU had a price match guarantee which they were using, at least here, to drive Children's Palace out of the market. They succeeded. Then they stopped honoring the policy, even though the sign still hung over their registers. For many ears after that I called them the Toys R Us Museum. You went there to look and elsewhere to buy. That was the kind of stupidity that bankrupts a company. Apparently it still is.

As Joe Moore notes upthread, Bankruptcy does not automatically mean "going out of business." Marvel Entertainment Group went bankrupt in the 90's but remained in business, just as one example.

That said, if TRU doesn't make some big strides towards streamlining and modernizing (which will probably mean closing more big-box stores), they're going to have a hard time coming out "OK" even under a bankruptcy.

Frankly, they're going to need to massively improve their online business. That's where they're getting killed.

Was over @ Barnes & Noble today & surprised by how large their selection of Lego's was & then I saw this news.

Not quite the Lego selection of TRU but more than I'd ever seen there.

I remember when I saw that Hastings had filed for Chapter 11.
I certainly hope they pull through because otherwise I'll be left with nothing but online options to get NECA stuff at regular prices. I have enough faith in TRU that I expect them to not have to close their doors forever.

They are not going to be closing any time soon, but they likely will be filing before the end of the year, and it will be the beginning of the end. They will restructure and limp along for optimistically... 5 years before going extinct. I think Macy's is the only store to bounce back from a situation like this. TRU will most likely follow a path similar to Borders or Circuit City.

Staples also, as far as retailers on the tip of my tongue...thank Mitt Romney. I agree with you and am not sure why Tomax is being ridiculed when the writing could very well be on the wall. Debt restructuring doesn't always work and depends largely on the team brought in and how many holders of (TRU's) debt there are. This definitely isn't good news, especially given the backdrop of a dying retail space...

Toys R Us used to be one of my favorite places to visit each weekend but I haven't been in a year or so. The closest one to me is about a 70 miles now. There was a closer one but it shut down. Just lost interest in going because they just never stock what I'm into anymore and it's so much easier just shopping on Amazon with Prime. The Exclusives are a bit tricky but I've been lucky finding them on the website.

With all the competition with online stores, it's no wonder they've been hurting. It would be a shame if they do eventually shut down though.

When the first wave of Playmates DS9 figures came out, I found them at Target. They had just put the figures on the pegs and they were on sale. I took the recipe to TRU. They did not have the figures yet and refused to match Target's price when they did get them. 3 days later I walk into Walmart and find the figures. I tell the checker "Target has them for $." She rings them up without needing to see the receipt. I took that one to TRU, stood under the sign and ask again, and again they refused. I said very loudly "So much for your falsely advertised price match guarantee." and walked out. They have never made a price match for me since.

Toys "R" Us in USA and Canada Files For Bankruptcy Protection - The Toyark - News

Bankruptcy has been filed. It's not a liquidation of assets, it's a debt restructuring.
