As a counterpoint, I do not like comic Venom at all and I think the trailers look quite good. Some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy though I'll give you that.

"If you're going to stay, you will only hurt bad people."

Where's a vomit emoticon when you need one? I think the suit itself looks alright and some of the stunts are cool but it the dialogue and story aren't there. All the cool effects in the world can't save it (look at ASM 2 for an example of that, some good ideas wrapped in a script of people making poor decisions just because the plot needs to unfold) Don't even get me started on the way Symbiotes is pronounced.... But this is a forum about toys, not movies haha

Point is? Star Wars has atrocious dialog, and it’s a billion dollar franchise. I wasn’t aware we were doing script writing classes. Nobody reads a venom comic or plans to watch the movie expecting Shakespeare. As it is, this thread has gone wildly off topic.

Glad to know you are the sole arbiter of what is good and what isn’t. Why you are in this thread is beyond me. Thankfully ignore exists so I’ll not have another minute wasted with your trolling.

If you think I'm trolling, you should see some of these other guys on here Won't hurt my feelings if you ignore me though, since I never once said the movie will or won't be definitively bad

You’re getting supplementary lines BECAUSE of the movie for now.
Like most new and adult rated movies, it’s getting a wait and see approach before money starts getting dumped on to it.

That’s what the drive thru at McDonald’s is for.

I like how Tom voices Eddie and Venom. His accent seems to annoy a lot of people, but I’ve known people from Chicago who talk just like that. It’s not a typical American accent, but it IS a dialect of American. Seems everyone wants him to sound like Hank Azaria.

The Venom voice is perfect. No vocal reverb like the cartoons. Reminds me of the Marvel Heroes version of Venom. And I’m glad they have Venom talking. I was afraid they’d be lazy like Sam Raimi’s version and pull the face back for dialog. The very toothy way of talking, and the fact that it’s really Eddie doing the talking, really nailed Venom.

Also love that Eddie looks like he’s in a trance while talking as Venom. I like this trailer more than any of the MCU trailers. Hopefully this spawns few sequels and collectibles, because I’m really pleased with how Sony is handling Venom.

While I do enjoy Azaria's voice as Venom from the cartoon my favorite Venom voice (the one I hear in my head when I'm reading) is Daran Norris from the 2000 video game, good times. I think Tom Hardy's Venom sounds fine right now, I phrase it as such because they technically could change it.

I don't want him to sound like Hank Azaria. I just want him to not sound hilariously bad. Reminds me of when Benedict Cumberbatch tried to do a Boston accent that one time. A lot of Brits can't do convincing American accents.

Venom needs a retconn/reboot origin more than Superman, batman, xmen, or wolverine. The human temper tantrum bonded to a bitter jealous ex-girlfriend symbiote is lame, and really was never intended to be a lasting character. The symbiote was the character. Eddie was expendable. Unfortunately, fanboys loved him, so Marvel's plans for killing off Eddie and having the symbiote jump around the marvel world was stopped for a while. Eddie wasn't even the original Venom. He was a last minute add. Original Venom was supposed to be a woman who miscarried her pregnancy due to a Spidey vs baddy battle. Marvel execs thought that was too dark, so they changed it to a temper-tantruming bodybuilder, popular in the late 80's comics.
All those examples you note still tie him to Spider Man. What story has aged poorly? Secret Wars, Spider Man wearing the symbiote in the early comics, Venom as a spider villain? I like Venom a lot right now, but for me that is driven by the richness of his connection to SpiderMan. And of course there’s that big white spider on his chest that doesn’t make much sense without a Spider Man connection. Unless you take it away like in the movie and you get a generic alien movie.

We’ll call it venom!” Without spider man, at least for the origin story, you’d be hard pressed to sell me a venom movie. I love the character, and Tom hardy is awesome (I’d rather have him do wolverine in the MCU, but what ever) but I’m sorry, Venom needs spider man, shit they share DNA for god sake! It would be like doing an X 23 movie without acknowledging wolverines existence.
Wasn't Venom originally supposed to be in some way related to Sony's 2017 Space Horror Alien clone movie "Life"? Keep in mind that merch licensing still mainly goes through Marvel. And Marvel was not real thrilled at Sony's Venom side projects. So they likely used the R rating as an excuse to tamp down on the licensed merch. They've been known to do that (see "Fan4stic") If Marvel doesn't have faith in the movie they will limit the merch to limit the brand damage.

I just watched this film and really enjoyed it. I thought it was going to be good, but it really exceeded my expectations. Other than the Walmart 3.75 figure I see no merchandise is even on the horizon. I hope maybe with toyfair we see something....from someone and finally getting to Deadpool would be nice as well. I get the “R” rating but still. I hope that venom continues deeper and becomes mcu cannon.

I suprisingly liked the movie too. I thought there will be more symbiotes/hosts but I guess they saved them for potential sequels. They changed the pronunciation to sim-bee-yote which was nice. Plot
holes yes, but I figured it was due to poor editing.

I rarely see merch for R-rated films toywise besides the occasional shirts and stuff.

Venom was PG13, not R. Also, I see all sorts of crap for R rated films. NECA has made a living off of it. I understand Hasbro not making anything, but I'm really surprised HotToys or NECA haven't announced something at the 12" to 18" scale yet. They've done stuff for Spider-man Homecoming, and honestly, I thought Venom was a much better film than that.

Right now, I'm just waiting for the unlicensed products to be released in Asia. If Marvel, Sony, and their licensed vendors don't want my money, I'm fine with "enterprising businessmen of questionable moral scruples" getting it.

I have tons of Venom figures. But I really wanted the movie look, which is different than others.

I'm actually relieved we seem to be getting normal Tom Hardy. He's a good actor but he definitely likes to play "characters". He looks generally normal, well groomed and attentive in the picture. Guess we'll have to wait for the voice/accent though.

I loved his voice in Venom. The neurotic Woody Allen-esque voice was perfect for Eddie Brock. Remember, the character in the comics was mentally unstable before he ever bonded with the symbiote.

That was before the reveal of the Venom wave. Those turned out to be all comics themed figures. Kinda like what Hasbro did to Fox with the Deadpool wave. Kinda sucks...

Well, I managed to snag a bootleg 1/6 scale movie Venom, so when that arrives from China in a few weeks, I’ll report back on quality.
