Since Spider-Man 4 has been confirmed there have been lots of rumors flying around as to who the villain in the film will be. Director Sam Raimi himself has expressed interest the character of Morbius, stating that he would be an interesting character to incorporate into the film universe.

Well, according to a story on Mania.com, Spider-Man 4 producer Todd Black has now confirmed that Morbius will indeed NOT be part of the film. The only hints he supplied as to who it will be is that the villain will be from the classics rogue gallery and that , "...people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

New rumors now abound, include Electro, Kingpin and, of course, Lizard (my personal choice as Dr. Connors has been featured in all the films).

Let the speculation begin! Who will be the new villain?

lol.

Personally I'm all for neogenic nightmare with lizard. Mostly just so they can resolve the loose threads from movie 2 that hinted about man-spider from his power loss. This would also explain the cheesiness of it, as it was peter's rationalization.

And with Man-Spider, we need a secondary hero, like Black Cat.

The vulture was planned previously, maybe they'll tap that one too?

I've been waiting for Lizard since the first one... I just love Doc Connors. So that's my first pick. However, I'd also love to see Kraven and the Chameleon, though that is less likely.

If it uses a big part of New York, could it be The Rhino???

And I hate the Vulture. Always did, always will.

Villians that'd let us see all of new york is a moderately decent list.
  • Lizard (sewers and parks, plays off the urban legend of gators in the sewers.)
  • Vulture (flight, suit and wing design could also test the waters for a DarkHawk tease/movie later.)
  • Morbius (misinformation or actually out? He flies and stuff too.)
  • Electro (electric jumping, plus it'd start the lizard for 5 similiar to spec spidey, would also explain why he's the first spidey villian in fury files besides the goblins, since Hasbro has the spidey 4 toy contract already as part of the previous deal when they got the marvel rights. It was mentioned literally by title in the contract as Spiderman 4, the first confirmation the movie would happen.)
  • Carnage (not likely, but would include him running all over new york to find a host repeatedly, or petey tracking infected carnage gwen.)
  • The Jackal (NO CLONES! So god please no, but he'd be all over new york too tracking spidey for samples, could also dabble in the ultimate spidey clone saga, but seriously, do we want clones in the later movies? Mutated MJ is about as far as I want to see in the clone saga, but the rest is so bleh.)
  • Man-Spider (petey gone animal, he'd go all over new york too with no restraint)
  • Scorpion (tracking petey, whether as gargan or his alter ego. Possibly a connor's creation to allude to the lizard later? Also opens the door for venompion. The sample plus gargan, which sidesteps the entire Brock movie issue. And still leaves the door open for carnage later.)
  • Black Cat (it'd just be fun to have her, and she needs to start showing soon with more respect than stacy had gotten).
  • Venom (He's out till his spin off)
  • Hobgoblin (many Green gobby labs around the city? Preferably no, no more goblins please. Cept for maybe the Ben Urich Good goblin, he was actually fun in his comic. But god please don't pull another Harry with him.)
  • Jack'O'Lantern (Same as Hobgobby, though a bit more creative, could work well with mysterio, and allow all of new york to be used through flight and crimes, since he's not as corporate in his attacks like the first gobby.)
  • Hydroman (we just had sandman, so not likely. Too similiar too soon.)
  • Rhino (Rampage through new york, would allow the building for the various mob bosses too, like tombstone, silvermane, and kingpin.)
  • Mysterio (again all over new york, and it's bruce cambell! His robot minions and machines can go cameo happy too! So they could cameo all previous villians, and not worry about characterization, cause they aren't the 'real villians'.)
  • Shocker (doesn't fit any preset criteria, he seems more ironman like than spidey for now. Though could work if they implement the mob bosses).
  • Silver Sable (silvermane tie-in)
  • The Tinkerer (only works with the mob bosses again, but explains rhino, Black Cat, and shocker, maybe even scorpion.)
  • Smythe (sets up the mob bosses, and his own stage would have to be set for his hatred of spidey, a neo-harry so to speak, that actually has good reason to hate spidey, without some dim-witted butler written in later. Also opens up the same doors as tinkerer, including the spidey slayers.)
  • Madame Web (her trials sending spidey all over new york, but do we really want her in the movie-verse? Does she even make sense there?)
  • Cardiac (Only works if they include him as part of the Black Cat stuff honestly, though to be frank I don't think he really could fit anywhere.)
  • The Tarantula (another mac gargan scorpion like story, he comes in try and take spidey down, for infringing on his criminal reputation.)
  • Kraven (the hunt taking him all over new york, works well with both man-spider and Lizard. Big part of the 'concrete jungle' that is new york.)
  • Chameleon (maybe a bit part at the beginning? As neat as he is, I don't see him lasting long in a spidey flick, spider-sense would find him too soon.)
  • Man-Wolf (Sets the stage for JJJ's son. Another tragic villian, they could also have a tweest, that it's not really John Jameson, but really MJ, or they were both infected or something. Sasquatch MJ is more fun than werewolf Jameson. But either could play off the lizard/manspider stuff too.)
  • Tombstone (He would be a big piece of new york, as he is both a rogue, a crime boss, and classic. He also keeps the stage open for many other aspects too. Also sidesteps the Kingpin issues and allows all mob usage like Rhino, smythe etc.)
  • JJJ (He runs the newspaper, doesn't get much bigger and classic than him in new york, plus he's the lead in for Gargan as scorpion. Or a bounty on spidey's head for questions about his recent Black Suit actions or what not. And that entire sandman fiasco.)

Not sure who else fits, the only other spidey guys I keep thinking of are Nova, Night Thrasher, Luke Cage, and DarkHawk. Since they all premiered in spidey's comic like Black Cat did.
Nova could work to explain where venom came from as well. A centurion following an escaped fugitive. He finally locates the planet, but the ship crashes, and he recruits a new user for the armor, but personally I'd save that for the venom and carnage return later, though it would be prefered to be set up prior to their maximum/seperation debut. So far, besides these hints given, the only thing we do know, is that the villian count will be below 3. 2 at most. Black Cat kinda skirts the issue since she's not really good or bad. And her usage wouldn't be as lame as harry's. Man-spider also gets an excuse outside the villian count, cause he's not really a villian, he's spidey gone hulked out so to speak. Mysterio also side steps this, as his special effects stuff opens possibilities. Lizard could also be counted as a 'non-villian' since he's more a tragic story like man-spider. Crime bosses also make excuses for more 'villians' since they would be henchmen, and not a real focus(Rhino, Shocker, tinkerer, etc).

Overall, I personally prefer Man-Spider and his connections. Helps clarify 3 for purpose, (Symbiote sped up the mutation) and fixes the lameness of spidey 2. Also could set kraven or Black cat up as part of his back up, when the venom/carnage return happens. And allows usage of Lizard, Scorpion, or even Morbius. Also could allude to Miles Warren, as curt and family move away to forget this mistake or whatnot.

Black Cat is who I really want, since they are saying no wedding yet. It'd be a nice aspect to use with MJ and her off and on Jealousy since she can't share in the adventures, and it'd set up a black cat as an antagonist after they were wed. It also brings Flash Thompson back, as the ultimate spidey fanboy, and Thompson is the very first rogue ever created anyway, even predating spidey himself since he bullied parker xD. Besides, it'd be a nice cue to geeks all over teh world, that the boy who never dated anyone in highschool, has 3 love interests, all overtly model hot.

Thanks for reminding me of the most retarded comic seen ever.

I was foaming at the mouth during Spiderman 3. I hated it. I want to bludgeon everyone involved with it. This just reminded me why.

It's interesting that you mention the tragic villain as that is a common thread thru all the films, especially with Doc Oc and Sandman. If they do go this route, would it be too much of the same? I've heard some complaints before that all of Spidey's movie villains fall under this category, so they might want to switch it up. Then again, it worked well for parts 1 and 2, so they might want to stick to the formula.

Whichever way they go, I really want to see Dr. Connors turn into the Lizard. You never see a character featured in a film series for three pictures and never utilized to their full potential. I hope we get that story. And having Black Cat in their sounds great too!

Tragic Villians only work for those that are actually tragic. So he could slide, as spidey 3 sent the formula eskew so to speak.

Think of it like this..
Formula
Formula Sequel
Break the mold absent mindedly
return to formula to save franchise.

The japanese do this often as well. Let's use Ultraman as an example, 20 years of the same, break the mold with nexus, follow up series is complete classic again. Then we have Kamen rider doing that too, 30 years of formula, break the mold with hibiki, follow up with utter classic influenced Kabuto. Sentai had done this as well with Gekiranger, but then returned to classic inspired Go-On as the follow up series. It's a formula thing, you try to break the formula for something new to see if the audiences want that, backlash ensues, you go back to formula to save the franchise and make money again with everyone happy. Repeat process later after 2 formula films, break the mold in a new way again, if it works, create new formula, if it doesn't return to old formula.
