Sweet as a Big X-Fan I'm happy for this and Bryan Singer will be the director too. So hopefully it'll be as good as the first X-Men and First Class.

First Class sucked, It didn't make any sense. The guy who played Magneto was great, but the rest were useless. I really hope they just start all over with the new magneto and get new people to play the X-men.

I liked First Class. If Bryan Singer can pull off what he did for X-2 and not Superman Returns then I'm in. I liked the director for First Class too, Matthew Vaughn. Same guy who also did Kick-Ass. I hope the story is good too. I do hate how Fox does the costumes though. No black leather please.

Was First Class a reboot or a prequel? I've heard people say it's both, but it can't be. I really hope they just go ahead and do a full reboot without trying to tie in to the other movies. No matter how good the director may be, that just puts limits on everything he can do to make it a great X-men movie.

I heard it was a film that helped set up X-men and X2, but ignored the events of X3 and XO:W hence the appearance of Emma Frost in both.

I loved X-men First Class, made me love the franchise again after the abhorrent mess that was X3 and the offensive rubbish that was Origins...

Continuity-wise, it was horrible and screwed up everything - and it really didn't have to do that at all. I can only assume the writers were too lazy to care what the other 4 movies had done. (To be fair, there were already problems.) It might have been better off to be a reboot, but it might not have gotten the attention it did otherwise.

As a movie on its own merits, it was really well done - and certainly better than a number of other superhero movies done recently. The acting was quite nice, and while several characters were somewhat pointless, it was fun seeing them on screen.

I still don't understand why people defend the X-Men films prior to First Class. First Class kept me engaged, but the others really let me down.

One Letter, one number: X2.

The first X-men movie was ok. It certainly put together a great cast. But the story was merely alright - I'll never understand why they can't just mine the comics for a great story, or at least not go so far from the story so that it is almost unrecognizable.

X-men: The Last stand was really poorly done. Major characters die meaningless deaths. Tons of new characters are added with no sense of back story or depth. The whole of the movie seemed a waste.

But X2 ... now that was really well done. And it is why people forgive the first movie so easily. Much like Spider-Man 2, which had its flaws, it also elevated the story as well. Heck, you could say the same thing about Empire Strikes Back - without a great second movie in a series, the movies either are forced to reboot or be abandoned altogether (ie Hulk and Fantastic 4). (A notable exception - Transformers; but it made so much money, who could stop it?)

First Class was really well done - easily my favorite superhero movie of the summer. Its ONLY failing was trying to connect it to the earlier movies - a completely unnecessary action, and one that only hurt it in the end.

I was hoping it would get a sequel. I really liked First Class and thought it was one of the best in the series. Hopefully now that they started much further back, they can avoid any future continuity issues with FC2 and any other sequels from now on.

It was more of a soft reboot than a full reboot or even a true prequel. Singer said he was inspired by 2009's Star Trek and its alternate timeline. Also, Vaughn & Singer deliberately ignored certain events from the previous X-films for First Class (some of which were already regarded as errors).

So to say that they tied it to the previous films is a bit misleading. They took the good and left the trash, so to speak.

The only thing I feel I need to do is remind everyone that at the time X-Men came out, there simply were no good superhero movies (Baring Superman). No one took them seriously, and Blade (Which marvel distanced themselves from to keep people from realizing it was a comicbook movie) and X-Men were what set the stage for All the ones we enjoy today.
So at the time, X-Men really was one of the best comic/superhero movies of alltime.
Other than that, I compleyely agree.

On this, I could *not* agree more. Moreover, a ton of those new characters were unrecognizable as to whom they represent. (It was almost two years before I realized that was Omega Red Wolverine fought in the forest. And I *still* can't figure out whom a lot of the secondary and cameo cast are supossed to be).
The only good points are Kitty Pryde, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.

Again, I could not agree more.

I hope it goes forward in a new direction. I want to see Charles' and Raven's relationship explored. It's complicated enough that it interests me, and worth delving into further.

Awesome news!

I thought all of the X-Men flicks were fun to watch, but First Class was 50x better than the other four. Looking forward to the sequel.

That is awesome!
I really founf First Class to be the BEST X-Movie by far- best acting and dialogue, smart and funny script...it was brilliant.
And a huge plus to me was that everything looked 1960's authentic- Cerebro is a giant thing that takes up a building, everyone's a total sexist, etc.

Looked at as it's own movie, it's the best, or at least atie with X2.
It ignores XMO and X3, but everyone should ignore those clusterfucks.

It's the first time magneto really becomes a believable character for me...I'm very happy they're making another movie...maybe we'll get Mimic or Vanisher...or Sunfire this time out!

I'm happy Optimus chimed in. How can you complain about any movie with January Jones and Jennifer Lawrence??? That was a movie about mutants or something, right?

Prequel.
Emma Frost isn't emma silverfox. If they were smart though with how vain emma is, they'd have her take the younger version's body at some point since her diamond form was cracked. This would also setup the lesson plan and ending of X3 with Xavier.

So far the only scenes it ignores are the helicopter ending in XMO:W, and the jean grey recruitment in X3, but both of those can be rationalized into a first class 3 later too somehow. All they need to do is have Magneto go back to the Institute briefly for Jean Grey, and possibly the helicopter scene too. (If Xavier is controling Eric to keep an eye on him after the events of XFC2 if they do the assassination story, it'd make sense and fit with continuity, but that'd make XFC3 take place during and after XMO:W too and it could setup the entire "Jean grey" split personality removal xavier did. Of course this means he would have to go bald in XFC2 or prior to those scenes in XFC3. If xavier is controlling Magneto with the helmet gone, it'd also potentially let him walk again with Eric's help until Eric storms off from being controled.)

Not so sure about that. Plots like that reek of bad writing and convolution in the comics. It'd fall flat in a movie. Best to ignore the wolverine chick even existing (Since she was obviously intended to be Emma Frost).

Well, they couldn't work Jean's recruitment in. X-Men was set in the ambiguous and ever looming "Not too distant future." First Class was set in the 50s. Jean wouldn't have even been born yet during First Class.
Saying this because i agree it can be worked in later.
Just because Maggie left at the end of First Class, doesn't mean he won't be back.
While they didn't nessisarily part as BFFs, Xavier and Magneto didn't exactly part ways as enemies.
Besides... I think Raven may push them to try working together again.

There was more they ignored than that. Hank McCoy being seen on TV without blue fur and Emma Frost as a member of the Weapon X project. IIRC, in the credits for XMO:W, the actress is actually credited as Emma Frost and Kayla's sister.

As for Xavier being able to walk at the end of XMO:W, that is easily explained by Xavier tricking them with an illusion. It would be similar to the trick he pulled on the Russian guard when they were hiding in the back of that truck in XMFC.

Actually, the early 60's (the Cuban Missile Crisis was in 1962). But I agree with your overall point about Jean's recruitment.
